He wasn't DFA'd, just left unprotected for the rule-V draft. No one took him because TJ (though a team COULD have taken him and stashed him on the DL all year).
I thought he made it to the 40 at one point (???)

Guess not. Just going off memory...

It was VERY quiet, in fact I didn't believe the person who told me at first until they provided their source. Not a single word from the Giants.

He went down with a mystery injury in August, had surgery on 9/6/17
I remember the mysterious injury toward the end of the season but it seemed to be downplayed quite a bit. Not sure if there was any talk of TJ because this news shocks me but, at the same time, he wasn't really on my radar to see added to the 40 man roster in November.

This was tough. The Giants have a number of catchers at the upper levels, and it sounds like most are sticking around. I thought perhaps Hacktor would opt-out, but no word yet.

At the lower levels, the Giants have some interesting prospects, all very good defensive catchers. Ricardo Genoves is the standout, but Rob Calabrese, Jeffry Parra, Andres Angulo are all showing some good things too. There's not an heir to Posey down there, but good potential backups.

Sacramento River Cats:

C- Hector Sanchez, Justin O'Conner, Trevor Brown

Richmond Flying Squirrels:

C-
Jeff Arnold, Matt Winn, Aramis Garcia

San Jose Giants:

C-
Rob Calabrese, Will Albertson, Jeffry Parra

Augusta GreenJackets:

This is the real exciting part. The Giants are pretty stacked in the OF, especially the lower minors. They also have some guys in the upper minors to pay attention to as well. The Augusta team this year could be particularly interesting. It may be wishful thinking having all these kids so aggressively promoted, but if they are that's one of the most exciting outfields the system has had in a long time.

Sacramento River Cats:

LF- Chris Shaw, Austin Slater, Calixte

CF- Steven Duggar

RF- Mac Williamson, Slater

Richmond Flying Squirrels:

LF- Luigi Rodriguez, Gio Brusa

CF- Ronnie Jebavy, Eury Perez

RF- Caleb Gindl, Dylan Davis

San Jose Giants:

LF- Heath Quinn, Logan Baldwin

CF- Bryce Johnson, Johneshwy Fargas

RF- Sandro Fabian, Baldwin, Daniel Carbonell

Augusta GreenJackets:

LF- Aaron Bond, Ismael Munguia

CF- Heliot Ramos, Malique Zeigler

RF- Alexander Canario

Other notables:

Mikey Eddy (held back), Jacob Heyward (no room), Ashford Fulmer (no room), Jose Layer (no room).

Saw this little nugget the other day, as many as five teams in the offseason asked for Alexander Canario in trades, and it's believed he would receive a bonus of at least $1m on the international market if he were available today (signed for $60k in 2016).

One guy I didn't list, Casey Kelly. Pitched in the River Cats-Giants game, had 6 K's in 3.1 innings. He's slated for AAA.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see him start a game or two for the Giants this season.

Minor league rosters are trickling in. I'll post some of them soon, but the early reports show that the Augusta team could be REALLY exciting this year.

Heliot Ramos, Gonzalez, Ziegler, Camilo Doval, Jason Bahr, Garrett Cave all slated to be there. Lots of talent

There's a typo in there. Olbis Parra is just a pitcher. I'm guessing Jeffry Parra is the catcher.

Seeing John Riley there makes my heart die just a bit. I had somewhat high hopes for him when he was drafted.

Maybe it's like that Bugs Bunny short where Bugs Pitches and catches his own pitches. (and plays all nine position himself) :D

Yeah I remember being pretty surprised he signed out of high school, he was thought to be locked in to going to college. Giants took a shot hoping to convince him to go with his hometown team and it worked.

That's about when the success story ended.

But he may not end up in Augusta after all. If I remember correctly, the rosters are pretty fluid between now and the minor league opening day. However, Riley has hardly shown anything offensively. I'm not sure why he chose to sign either.

Local kid, maybe felt some pressure from his family ("oh, you got drafted by the Giants! You HAVE to sign it's always been your [our] dream!"), I tried to look up his signing bonus but couldn't find it.

I'd say this is pretty set, but he's org depth at this point.

Opening Day rosters have been announced for Sacramento, Richmond and San Jose (in addition to Augusta's already released roster). Here are some notable names omitted from rosters:
Pitchers: Tyler Beede, Sam Coonrad, Ian Gardeck, Chase Johnson, Domenic Mazza, Manny Parra, Dereck Rodriguez, Sam Wolff, Stetson Woods
Infielders: Kelvin Beltre, CJ Hinojosa, K.C. Hobson, Jose Vizcaino, Kevin Rivera
Outfielders: Caleb Gindl, Robinson Medrano, Eury Perez

Edit: I realize that a few of these guys are starting the season on the disabled list (i.e. Coonrod, Gardeck, Johnson and Wolff) and Beede is probably waiting at spring training for a call up this week.
