Abiatal Avelino is one of the pieces in the deal. He's a 23 (24 in February) year old middle infielder. Career-high 15 homers this year, but defense is his calling card. Projects as a utility infielder. Needs to be protected on the rule 5 draft. With Kelby out of options, Avelino could be a replacement.

Defensive minded, good contact hitter. Utility profile. Similar to Ryan Howard, C.J Hinojosa
So we will have three middle infielders vying for AAA roster spots next year? Keep in mind the Giants tend to pick up about 50 of these types in the minor league free agent market.

So we got more of what we already have. Only this kid requires a 40-spot next year.

Hey, I would have been somewhat OK if they gave him away for free, so gettiting a kid who can compete for a 25-spot for the next 5-6 years is a decent return. And we still have another player coming as well.

We also got Calixte (though I would be surprised if he is back).

Looks like Cutch was just traded to the Yankees. Two prospects headed to the Giants

Good for him.
I know that its a bit late to think about this, but does the trade and budget relief (assuming there is any) more than outweigh the draft pick from the qualifying offer? Something I didn't think about until now.
And I'm not with cal on re-signing him. I don't think he'll be worth a 3 year deal.

I'd guess the other piece would be one of their many pitchers that are rule-5 eligible, like Nick Green or Adonis Rosa.

They could always get this guy named George Kontos as well

What we really need are outfielders! We have way too many middle infielders. Is this the best they could do? I hope the players are good, but color me disappointed.
If the point was salary relief, then yes, it is the best they could do. Otherwise, a little meh but not too surprising, considering the time of year.

He is a 1-month rental in a year he is putting up his career worst numbers. What did you expect?

Personally I don't think the the QO would have been a huge risk. He makes nearly $15 million this year, the QO will probably be around $18m-$19m this offseason. He's 32 and will be looking for his final multi-year deal. I don't think that extra $3m-$4m was going to sway him.

For the Giants, if they lost him, their compensation would have been a pick in between the 2nd and 3rd round (~picks 75-80), or after the 4th round if they were over the tax. So not a huge bonus tbh.

Basically picks in the range where you would draft.....guys just like the 2 we got. But ours have already had some time in pro ball.

Interesting. I've read the dude just can't hit at the AAA level and that he K's waaaaay too much.

Org depth I'm thinking. De Paula is intriguing though.

was hoping for a legit power prospect in this. kinda makes me question are we going to really make drastic changes like Sabean suggested or continue with the same philosophy that worked in the past

For a one month rental?

I think your expectations were too high.
