Captain Munnerlyn...Apparently PIT had some interest before he signed with MIN...Tomlin's MO is once he has interest, he seems to circle back when they are available.

For the right price, as slot insurance it might not be a bad move.

Thoughts?

I'd like it for the right price. Quality depth CBs are a necessity in this league. But I'd like it more if Tomlin & Butler removed the 90%+ zone coverage schemes because I don't think anyone can excel consistently in that scheme.

I think I would too...maybe I'm in overkill mode on Gay, but I just don't think he's a capable player anymore...Munnerlyn can play some slot, and maybe hold down the CB3 job until (if) Golson can finally take the field, he gives them another guy that will probably be better than Gay next season.

Scheme...what we saw in the AFCCG was way too soft. I don't see them going totally away from a zone scheme, but they might play more match up zone...instead of just playing an area...when a player enters your zone you man up. Whether they land Munnerlyn or not, I think a draft pick needs to be spent on a CB...preferably a hybrid guy that can go inside or outside.

Must-read material even if its exactly what we already knew... Better to hear it from his mouth

Kevin Colbert shines light on Ladarius Green, Le’Veon Bell and Big Ben’s future

Colbert notes:
QBs... Operating under the assumption that Ben will return. Wants Landry back in the mix, and wants to add a young prospect but doesn't know when (draft, FA, etc). Knows that a succession plan is paramount.

Bell... Talked about the tag first, but wants a long-term deal to get done. Wait & see approach with contract talks.

Green... Cleared NFL concussion protocols but not yet cleared medically with the team. AKA he hasn't taken a physical. Of which they are in no rush to get done so don't read too far into it. He still remains in the team's future plans.

My thoughts:
QB... If I am reading between the lines correctly on the QB situation, its a fair assumption that there will be new blood regardless of Ben. Even if it sucks to hear Colbert wants Landry to stick around, I think its a smart move. Landry is their only Ben insurance right now. From the sounds of it they will attempt both FA & draft, but you can't bank on them landing a quality prospect. Landry is not the sexiest of insurances, but its all they got right now and he would keep the team at the very least competitive until they do find the right guy.

Bell... After AB's contract gets done, which will take a while, I'm assuming Bell gets the tag. Seems logical given Bell's off the field issues.

Green... We've said it before, but it is what it is. If he can come back and stay healthy then its a huge plus for the offense. If not, then its another year of solid money flushed down the drain.

It was a good read.

QB...they don't think Ben is retiring...but if he did, I don't think it would change their pick at 30. Clearly Landry is the #2....they don't have as much confidence in Mett as we do. IDT they expect to find the heir apparent in this draft...I wouldn't be surprised to see them take another shot at a duel threat/project type guy.

Bell...I think they know he is truly the straw that stirs the OFC. He's said he wants to be in PIT...assuming they get him something in the $25-30mil guaranteed range (with an out clause of course) I think he signs long term before camp.

Brown...the only question I have is does he get Julio money or not...imo Julio is the best WR in the league, AB is second.

Green...as we know, the Steelers are not a knee jerk type franchise. In spite of us fans thinking they should cut ties, they were never going to axe Green after this one year. That, said, they have to also know this guy is literally a ticking time bomb and may not be long for this league. I would be shocked and very disappointed if they don't draft a kid with deep seam capability. JJ is very capable, but he has a ceiling, in complement with a deep seam guy, they are less reliant on WRs.

Great work Face!

Love the highlight reel for Budda...you have to be prepared to start him to make that pick at 30 though. Gay out, Budda in. Slot...not a S in this league at that size.

Rivers...like his size...2nd rd seems high for him, but maybe I'm missing something.

Butt...athletic...really like the high point TD catch...like him better than the Vitech kid.

Cutrer...like, not ready to start at this level, but has the frame to add 15 lbs.

Javancy...like these small school guys. dbl down on a OLB prospect.

Like the picks...hopefully one or two actually become Steelers.

QB... I agree. I'm hoping to see Mett get a decent amount of preseason reps this year. But as we said before, if they draft a new guy then that basically shoves Mett out the door. I have a feeling we will see Landry get a deal early in FA next month. And since they aren't in dire straights yet with the Ben situation, the possibility of them chasing a FA is slim to none.

Bell... I really hope they can get him locked up long term but I would completely understand them tagging him. And yes, an out-clause is a must if they do ink him long term. So far this offseason he hasn't shown any signs of growth from his recent suspensions. He's already hanging out with Snoop Dogg again, and of course releasing more rap mix tapes... :L I feel its only a matter of time before he's back in hot water.

Brown... I think he deserves every bit of what Julio makes. But will the Steelers break the bank to get it done? Seems like the Steelers rarely do that, if ever. But they are loyal so I think the deal will get done. I just hope AB's ego will take a back seat next season and all that maturity talk on his end holds true.

Green... All good points. It's exciting to think about the offense's capabillities when he's on the field, even without Marty B. But they have to be thinking about draft or FA to get more insurance. Grimble is UC for another year, but it's hard to gauge his value with how limited his usage was. Green was clearly seen as an instant upgrade. If the right guy is on the board in rounds 3 or 4 then I hope they do grab someone with great potential.

I like all the above except for Rivers. I really don't understand the hype for that kid. All the game tape that I've watched is discouraging, ESPECIALLY for a 2nd round pick. With all the inconsistencies with shedding blocks, reaction speed, maintaining the point of attack, and gap-awareness I think he looks more like a 4th Rd prospect at best. I think he benefited from playing in the FCS

Bell...he would be dumber, much dumber than I thought he was if he gets popped for pot again and would totally deserve the consequences...yep, the tag is a given and they may go that route to see if he can handle another season clean. He's poised to make at least $25 mil guaranteed and then some long term, if he can stay clean...but hanging out with Snoop is not a good sign.

Brown...(can be controlled easier than Julio with the dbl) but on this team AB is certainly worth top dollar and they will pay him probably as much, maybe more than Jones. Admittedly the diva stuff bothered me and it still does. Hopefully the contract will allow him to refocus on the team 100%. He's going to be effective, we know that, but they really need a #2 to surface or imo it's going to be tough to get back to the AFCCG.

TE...could not agree more. Grimble not getting any run late when Green was down is a sign that maybe they don't trust him enough...at the same time he was another cheap player to retain...we shall see.

Word is the Steelers are watching what the Vikings do with Adrian Peterson.....
If the Vikings cut him as expected, it would bring the salary for all RBs in the league down a good bit, and Pittsburgh will tag Bell instantly. If the Vikings decide to keep Peterson, Pittsburgh will be looking to come to terms with Bell!!!

Read an article on it, don't know where, can't find it....But I swear this is what I read....

I do not understand what Tomlin and the F/O see in Jones......
And why not give Mett a fighting chance to take the #2 spot from Jones, I mean the guys biggest attribute is he lost to the Patriots.....Whopty fuckin dooo......

The F/O and Tomlin owe it to this team and the fans to put the best product on the field, and Jones can't do that. I don't understand, they had no trouble bringing in asshole Vick and benching Jones. And Hell, even I wanted Jones over Vick.....Why not give Mett a fighting chance FFS. :L

Interesting...I'm not sure why MIN cutting AP would factor into this unless they are using his contract as the starting point or something to match.

AP is still a top shelf RB, but they are at different phases of their careers.

To his credit Landry always seems to show just enough to not get cut. To the FO, he always made sense from a cap hit standpoint...but now as a FA, they will have to pay some real money to keep him.

Mett...I've been a big Mett guy since he got kicked out of UGA for the assault charge or whatever. There has to be something missing for a guy with his size and arm to be barely hanging on in this league.

As it stands now, they don't seem to have much interest in Mett as the QB2...I would rather have a guy like Schaub for $3mil as the QB2 over Landry and draft a young kid as QB3.

If AP gets stays in Minn. depending on what they pay him will determine what the pay for Bell would be...

EDIT : if they decide to franchise tag him

I get that, but AP is clearly nearing the end whereas Bell is coming off his rookie deal...I guess the FO will look at AP's deal as the benchmark.
