Because the Tigers won't be winning anything (despite what Doug predicts) for the next couple of seasons, with or without Upton. So they might as well dump his salary. He's owed $88.5 million for 2018-2021.
yah but i kinda figured he would opt out considering the season he had--- or at least you could get a decent prospect for him....

is the prospect you got a real prospect?

Why did the tigers just give away justin upton?

he was their only good hitter that isnt ancient.

dont understand that one.

He had an opt out after this year, which he probably told them he was going to exercise because the entire franchise is a shit-show and he wants out, so it was lose him for nothing or get a piece of shit to stack with the others they have in their farm system.

...And Upton, with the season he's having (career-best .904 OPS), would probably opt out of his contract at the end of this season. He had that option written in.

okay that makes sense

i guess i thought the opt out was after next year thus giving the tigers at least some leverage----- but if its after this year i get it.

why would you stay there? Detroit is unfortunately in for a long and painful rebuild. I mean- they were a good team for a while but constantly making win-now moves and having your entire roster begin aging out at the same time is not good.

at least now they might accept the fact a top down rebuild is necessary.

Aah, you were typing when I was.

Agree, it seems they could have gotten more. But one month from now, they were probably looking at getting nothing at all.

Grayson Long is 8-8 with a 2.69 ERA between A+ and AA this year. #9 prospect in a so-so Angels organization.

Verlander. Razor sharp. CY YOUNG....2nd half
They give out Cy Young's for half seasons? Boy its too bad they didn't give out MVP's for the first month of the season. Former Tiger masher Chris Shelton would have cleaned up

There's a difference between "win now" moves and just complete retarded bullshit. The Verlander and more so Miggy deals are absurd. They're going to hurt them for years to come, and with Mr I gone and his kids running the joint, I wouldn't be surprised that they want to bring their payroll more inline with revenue.

Priorities ... they have both the Red Wings and Pistons playing at Little Caesars Arena now.

Oh wait ... those teams are both crapheaps, too.

I feel for you, Howie. You're a good one, but most of the Tigers fans around here are jackoffs, so when I discuss the Tigers, I use extra snark, which given my natural predilection for snark it adds up to a shitton of snark. I hope you know it's not for you.

It's a message board and I've never met any of you. Nothing is taken personally.

The real special times are when Redfoot brews up his Cutty Snark
