You are correct. W/L is not the best way to judge a STARTING pitchers ''worth''. Wins and loses are team dependent stats. In this instance, JV's W/L record would probably be better if he was in the Astro's rotation. As for ERA and WHIP....unfortunately, JV's numbers in those categories are also poor. His ERA of 4.66 is not good and his WHIP of 1.50 is one of the worst among all starters in MLB.* Hopefully he can bring those two numbers down by seasons end....so some team sees him as worth at least part of his $28mil salary for 2018. (Even if he doesn't win 10 games this year.)

*Crappy Jordan Zimmermann's WHIP is 1.52

Tigers' BIG 5 (Verlander, Cabrera, Zimmermann, Upton, and VMart) will be owed $122 million in salary next season. Of those 5, only Verlander has a chance to be traded (unless Upton is stupid enough to opt out of his final 4 years) and Detroit will probably have to eat about a third of JV's contract to move him.

Upton is having a very good year. Is it good enough to go back on the FA market and get a 4-year deal worth what the Tigers will already owe him for those 4 years? Hell no.

When I was a kid, I always was happy when the Yankees lost. Yet I never lost sight of the fact that my main "objective" was to cheer for the Tigers to win. Seems that some fans are more concerned about some other team losing, than their own team winning. Isn't that called sour grapes?

I am not expecting the Tigers to "win it all" for a few seasons. It takes time to rebuild after your minor league system has been decimated. Tigers have to find a way to get younger and more athletic. Fingers crossed for 2020.
