Wasn't sure where to put this, but I didn't want to start a new thread:

San Francisco Giants Rumors - MLB Trade Rumors

The Giants plan to meet with representatives of first baseman Brandon Belt this week to discuss a long-term contract, Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News reports. Baggarly takes a deep and excellent look at the complicated matter of valuing the soon-to-be 28-year-old, talking with Belt and GM Bobby Evans about the upcoming talks. For his part, Belt says he hopes to remain in San Francisco but notes: “It’s all going to come down to what’s fair. And, you know, I hate to say it like that, but that’s the reality.” Evans declined to offer any thoughts on what might be fair from the team’s perspective, but said that the organization “believe in his bat, his defense, his character and the continuity that he, if healthy, can add to our lineup.” He went on to note some of the matters that may hold down the team’s bottom-line on price: “Strikeouts are certainly a challenge for him, but he’s also a guy who gets on base at a pretty fair clip. It’s a fair debate in the sense of the different perspectives. But on some level, injuries have been more of an issue than performance.”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I would be a fan of this. Although I must say we are getting chest-deep in LT contracts. Fortunately we have some years before we even have to think about Panik and Duffy, and Bum.

I am happy that we have Belt. But we need the wiggle-room for Posey and we have top-flight hitters coming up who need a position to play as well (Arroyo, Shaw). Belt is a top 1B, but he is not an ELITE 1B.

Yeah, but bird in the hand and all that. I don't think it will take elite money to lock him up. Give him the Crawford deal. I think he would take it, or close to that.

I'm not saying it's clear-cut. I see the arguments on both sides. I just think the safer play is to sign him. We know what we're getting (though I believe he has upside). Solid hitter, solid D, he fits in the clubhouse. Two rings. For me, the percentages say lock him up.

He is not worth a Craw-deal, though. Crawford plays elite D at an elite defensive position. Belt plays elite D at a toss-away position. For a SS, Craw's bat is elite. For a 1B, Belts bat is above average.

IMHO, we got a steal of a deal with Crawford. So that's not necessarily a good comparison from a performance standpoint.

Add to that there is no one imminent to take Belt's place. I agree about Posey and looking to play him there more and more. But there is no Posey replacement imminent either. Sorry tzill. Susac was close, but if playing Posey at first means Susac or Brown is in and Belt is out, that is a significant downgrade offensively and defensively, at this point.

We have won two WSC's with Belt at 1b, and he still has upside, maybe significantly so.

There are no certainties with these things, but there are percentages. I like the odds here.

However, I think Parker s destined for 1B. Maybe Pence or Mac as well, if they dont want Arroyo playing 1B.

Again, is mantra on this site, I will trust that what ever the PsTB decide. If they let him walk, they have SOMEONE ready to step up (or over). If the sign him, they plan on moving someone out, or they dont feel super-confidant with the next option.

The FO has more than earned that benefit of the doubt.

Belt on Craw's deal would be a steal. His contract would be pretty trade-able too, if we went that route.

Unless he had a no-trade clause, or a trade kicker. I doubt he'd sign without one or the other.

The problem is that none of these guys are "natural" 1B. Although your speculation seems reasonable. 1B is probably the easiest position to learn.

And I agree with re the FO - they have more than earned our trust. But I don't pretend to know their mind, every major move they've made in the recent past made sense, so I think signing Belt to a LT deal falls in that category.

It doesn't hurt Belt's case that he is killing it at the plate in ST this year - 1.192 OPS, .385 avg.
