If a player is demanding a trade, I think no-trade clauses pretty much get thrown out the window. Not legally, but logically.

"I have a no-trade contract, so you cant trade me, but I DEMAND to be traded!!"

You really think he'd accept a trade to the Astros? He'd have to accept.

Just saw a report that said Sandoval is discussing deals in the $80-90mil range.......

That is right in our wheelhouse. I would be very surprised if he took a deal like that from another team if we are willing to offer similar money.

I think it all comes down to contract length. If the 6-year pact is what it takes, I really don't think the Giants get him. But in that case, I think there is a VERY real possibility that Tomas comes here.

Regardless, it looks like the whole Panda story will be over in the next day or two.

I just read the Giants have offered 5/90 and Panda will decide by the end of the week.

I REALLY don't like the years, but if the PsTB think they can keep him focused, I will be OK with it.

I don't really care too much about the $$$ in the deal. Everything will cost what it costs, regardless, and it isn't my money (and I don't live in the BA anyway, so they don't see any of my money as it is).

That seems reasonable in today's market. I don't think he's worth it but I don't really want him to leave. Something would be missing if he was not on the team.

In a world where Stanton is 'worth' his deal, Pablo is worth every penny of 5/90. Frankly, he's 'worth' exactly as much as an owner is willing to pay him. That's capitalism.

People just have to get used to this, every year a new bar will be set, 25 is the new 20, 20 is the new 15. It's just how it works.

A legit, non-All-Star starter, into his FA years is worth approx. 12M nowadays. A solid 4th OF or #1 Util is EASILY 6M.

Once you start getting into All-Stars or post-season heroes or marketing darlings, the sky is the limit. Add all three? Fuggetaboutit.

Agreed. Can't blame the players. Its not my money anyway and if it gets to the point where, in order to pay these salaries, they have to charge me more than I'm willing to pay to watch a game, I'll just quit going.

another measure is WAR...to justify his contract he needs to produce about 2.7 WAR per year. He's a good bet to do that.

Just for fun I've been looking into WAR...many flaws with it. Certainly enough ambiguity to prevent using it so precisely...

Since the WAR calculation itself is so weird and flawed, I find it hard to accept precision like 2.7. So it's a bad deal if he does 2.5/year? A great one at 2.9?

:noidea:

I know these are just SportsHoopla posters but have a look...Bill James himself, peace be upon him, is pretty skeptical:

Yeah, I know WAR isn't perfect, it's just one metric. But, it's a superior metric to AVG or RBI, IMO. I don't think you can say "2.5 WAR is a bad deal" or ""2.9 WAR is a great deal." It's imprecise as you say. I think it's fair to say "1.5 WAR is a bad deal" and "4.0 WAR is a good deal" though.
