Here is the Dodgers' post-season record (furthest series they advanced to) since the last time they won it all (1988).

2015 : NLDS (lost to Mets)
2014 : NLDS (lost to Cards)
2013 : NLCS (lost to Cards)
2009 : NLCS (lost to Phillies)
2008 : NLCS (lost to Phillies)
2006: NLDS (lost to Mets)
2004: NLDS (lost to Cards)
1996 : NLDS (lost to Braves)
1995 : NLDS (lost to Reds)

1988 : won WS (beat Oakland)

Thanks for the research. I'm definitely in full schadenfreude mode over yesterday's result.

So they have a 3-9 record since they last won.

That's better than 0-0 since the last time we won, I guess...

But in the same time period, we are 12-5 (not counting WC games)

I remember being a grumpy Giants' fan in October 2008 and 2009, listening to the postseason on the radio, hoping someone would step up to keep the Dodgers from going to the World Series. Thankfully, the Phillies stepped up to the plate both times. Wow, what a different era we live in now compared to then.

I get that its the standard line but there is still something funny about a player opting out of his contract saying that he hopes that he returns next season with the same team. You've got the contract in place, if its so important to you to be on the team, then why opt out? Zack Greinke to opt out of deal with Los Angeles Dodgers

I disagree (I don't think that it's funny at all). So many players have done the same simply to get more money from a team (either the same team or another one). Since he will be top-3 in Cy Young voting this year (and there's a good chance he'll win it), this is the perfect year for him to do so - hell, his season may be the best performance of the last decade. He's 32, so this is his 'last chance' for him to cash in on a 5- or 6- year deal at ~ $25M/per.

It's all about soul-less, selfish douchebags collecting as much as possible (i.e., Dodgers and Yankees).

Disagree 100%.

It is about someone doing what is best for himself. Why leave money on the table? The money is there, and owners have shown that they will spend it.

When you decide to willingly leave money on the table at your work, let me know. And don't come back with some sib-story about the company needing to cut salaries to stay alive. MLB teams are not on the verge of bankruptcy. They are all flush with cash. If Greinke can get one to give him more, more power to him. And his current contract allows him to excercize this option, so there is no under-handed ness involved.

My point is the emptiness in a player saying that he hopes that to return to a team when he has full control on that decision. If more money is more important than ensuring he plays with the same team, then don't say that. Be honest. If making more money is your goal, then just say that or don't say anything at all.

His 2015 was one of the top 15 pitching seasons of ALL TIME, although it's true that Clemens' 2005 ranks slightly ahead of him. It was historic, he's had three excellent seasons in a row, and he's worth much more than the 3/41 left on his contract. Of course he opts out. This was exactly the reason the option was included in the contract. He took less money to get that option.

Greinke saying he 'hopes to return' has to be read in context. What he's saying is that 'all things being equal' he'd 'like to return.' I.e., if the doyers offer a competative deal, he'd like to come back, but he's not taking a discount to do it.

This is how I read it.

He opted out to get a raise. He wants to stay, but that isn't the only issue at play.

Hell, we don't know. Maybe he is a pure mercenary and if the Rays offer him one penny more he will move to Tampa. I have no idea. But taking his comment at face value does mesh with his actions of opting out. Opting out was a smart business move.

Why fans want to insist that pro athletes act against their own best interests is beyond me. This is their job.

I'm not trying to argue that he shouldn't exercise his right to opt out. That is his call. To me, it seems disingenuous to say he wants to stay with the team and then look to go elsewhere. Maybe its splitting hairs, but why not say that he wants the most money in a new contract and hopes the Dodgers give him the best offer?

By NOT saying that, he is increasing his suitors. The Giants, Yankees, Cubs, Angels, and Red Sox are all likely going to at least kick the tires on him. The more that like him means the more his contract will likely be worth. The Dodgers will very likely NOT be out-bid for his services, so you might as well get the number up as high as humanly possible.

If he had exercised his opt-out, and claimed that he would follow the money, that would be horrible moving forward if he did resign with the dogs. He would essentially be a merc to his teammates and to the fans. And as we all know, mercs do not get the same leeway as "our own guys" get.

I believe he WANTS to stay with the dogs. I also believe that he will BASICALLY go with the money. If there are two identical offers on the table, one from the Giants and one from the dogs, I fully expect him to chose the dogs. That does not mean that he should not pursue a deal with the Giants to every length he possibly can.

Vogey has earned more money in his career than probably any of us will earn in our entire lives. Yet he was about to sign with Houston last year. He loves the Giants, but he has to do what he has to do. It is his job.

He's said that. Almost verbatim.

Did he say that THIS time? I know he said that when he left the Angels...

Read a cute one today.

When one refers to "The Los Angeles Angels", you are really saying "The The Angels Angels".

I thought Vogey was about signing with someone willing to offer a big league deal. I thought the Giants have moved on from him but changed their minds last minute.
I understand all that goes on behind the words but everyone knows (or assumes, like I am) what is really the motivation.

That was a common joke out here in Orange County when the owner decided to "relocate" the team's name. Most Angels' fans just talk about "the Angels" now. No need for redundancy. :)

Yeah, he' an opportunistic cocksucker. Fuck him and the syphalitic agent he rode in on.

That's my point.

Vogey is a Giant, through and through. But he will leave if another team comes calling. If the Giants would give him a comparable deal, absolutely. He stays. But he will go for an MLB contract over an invite from the Giants.

Does that mean he is a selfish player just out for a buck, with no regard for the Giants?
