Ranked #3 by Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, and #5 by MLB.com and ESPN. He throws a fastball that touches 98, a plus slider, change and cutter. A reliever until 2015, Tate faded a bit down the stretch (although he was managed carefully), calling into question whether he can withstand the rigors of starting.

So he has 2 plus pitches and maybe he can improve the change and the cutter. I wonder how fast he is expected to get to the bigs?

Was also reading he is good at spotting his pitches so sounds like he is not just a thrower. His slider is in the mid to high 80's to go with his 94-96 mph fastball. And you heard Pedro Martinez say he could be a great closer. We will just have to wait and see.

Great information.

Tate's offspeed stuff is also of a major league caliber. His best secondary offering is a tight, 83-84 slider with two-plane break that plays excellently off of his fastball. The slider has sharp, consistent shape and Tate shows an ability to command it for strikes or use it as a swing-and-miss offering out of the zone. On top of his dynamic fastball-slider combo, Tate also shows a strong changeup that is ahead of those of most of his peers, with some nice sink and fade. Though he's in just his first year as a starting pitcher, Tate looks pretty far along in his development and is sporting some major league ready stuff. Unsurprisingly, he has been dominant for UCSB, with a 77/20 K/BB ratio and 1.57 ERA in 74 and 2/3 IP for the Gauchos.

Based on 2015 performance, Tate projects as a frontline starter in the major leagues.

I am impressed with what we are finding out about this guy. Hopefully here in about 2 and a half hours we can be pleased again.

I don't mind not getting another SS. We just had bad luck that the draft is so thin.

Anyone know what Tate throws and how good each of those pitches are? I know he throws a 98 MPH fastball. Other than that I am not sure.

He's a 4 pitch pitcher.

Fastball: 93-96mph
Slider: Mid-80s
Changeup: Mid-80s
Curveball: Upper-70s

His fastball will touch 99. His fastball and slider both look like plus pitches according to one scouting report I read. He really hasn't used the curve and change up much because he hasn't had to, and neither are flashing as plus pitches at this point, though the change up could develop for him. The scouting report questions whether the curve is more than a show pitch at this point. It also mentions he's got too much going on with his mechanics, but the arm delivery is described as low effort.

He's listed as 6'2". I thought he was 6' even. That 2" makes me feel a little better about his potential as a starter, but I dunno. I question whether he'll be a starter or another Kela.

Scouting report I saw says he'll need some work, but doesn't have any red flags.

Apparently he was scouted by the same scout that scouted Gallo.

The last college pitcher we selected #4 overall made it to the big leagues 2 and a half months after being drafted. That is a little misleading though as Keven Brown made it up here for a cup of coffee after rosters expanded. He pitched 5 innings in Sept. 1986, but then didn't pitch up here again until Sept. 1988, but then he was here to stay.

Scott Lucas gives this information on Tate.

Listed at 6'2", 200, Tate is considered the best or second best pitcher depending on source. He turned 21 last month.

Tate throws a fastball that ranges from 92 to 98, a very good slider, a change that flashes average-solid and occasional curve that doesn't rate as well. He was converted to a starting role this season, and while used cautiously, he did lose velocity later in appearances and late into the season. Assuming for the sake of argument that he signs quickly, I'll be interested to see how Texas manages his workload.

Just saw his interview. Nice thing about picking a college pitcher that high is there's little doubt of his intention to go pro. Wonder what it'll take to sign him?

College players usually start out at Spokane which is a short season A level ball.

Chi Chi started in Spokane, but also got in some time at the High A level Myrtle Beach team the year he was drafted. Then last year he started out at High A and then moved up to AA.

If he can develop that change up he could find himself in the bigs in a couple of years.
