Not sure either. I do like he is coming out of college and everyone seems in sync with him being a good BP guy.

I hope Tate is able to finish the transition to becoming a starter by not finishing tired next year. They said he kind of struggled down the stretch this year since it was his first year as a starter. I guess the Rangers fell in love with transitioning pitchers from the rotation to the pen and vice versa so much that they decided to draft someone who has already went through that.

Not sure why you all question the pick. Every last site out there pretty much agreed that after the 3 top SS there was a sizable drop off in talent among hitters, and the Rangers took the consensus top pitcher in the draft.

This year's draft class is the weakest in quite some time, and because the Astros were given a free pick to reward their stupidity for picking Aiken last year, that screwed the Rangers out of Brendan Rogers.

I don't mind not getting another SS. We just had bad luck that the draft is so thin.

Anyone know what Tate throws and how good each of those pitches are? I know he throws a 98 MPH fastball. Other than that I am not sure.

Ranked #3 by Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, and #5 by MLB.com and ESPN. He throws a fastball that touches 98, a plus slider, change and cutter. A reliever until 2015, Tate faded a bit down the stretch (although he was managed carefully), calling into question whether he can withstand the rigors of starting.

So he has 2 plus pitches and maybe he can improve the change and the cutter. I wonder how fast he is expected to get to the bigs?
