I'm starting to wonder if the Price deal is a multi team thing. MLBtr says the Yankees are in discussions too. Do they have anything near enough for Price? They could be a 3rd team in a deal.

It sounds cynical, but it's probably true.

Job security, man. If the M's end up over .500 this year (which in any book would be considered mild overachieving), Z will get credit for it, and probably get an extension with the M's. And if they don't extend him, he might be able to get hired on somewhere else.

He loses everything if he makes a big deal right now that goes wrong, so he just won't take the risk. Pretty smart of him.
