I'd be happy with Nix... But I also like the idea of taking Ellis (LA Tech) in a later round (3 or 4?). Only because I think using a 1st rounder on a position that we only put on the field maybe 40% of defensive plays isn't very smart. But the argument can be made that the NT position wasn't utilized as much because they didn't trust McLendon to anchor.

and theres what im thinking, they didnt trust what we had.

Think about the D when Hampton was rolling...........he was an anchor that we didnt realize.........If nix is there i think you have to sure that position up.....its vital..........ellis may or may not be there.......i like him, but later rounds get tricky

You've been consistent, so I'm guessing you really think he'll be an impact player.

I'm still a skeptic that he can be, but obviously we need a NT so it's not a bad pick in that regard.

I think he fits exactly what we need a true 3-4 NT with athleticism, and wont make it out of round 1

I agree completely. But can't the argument of the NFL turning into a more pass-happy league be made against the NT position? It's a difficult position to be in, but one thing is for sure... Lebeau's defense thrives off of the performance of the anchor. Hampton made a star out of a lot of LB's during his tenure.

It would be worthwhile for PIT to shop the 15th pick to move back into the 20-25 range and grab Nix. Only if they felt confident that they could land him there. Colbert said it himself, this is the deepest draft talent pool that he has ever seen. Why not try to take more out of the cookie jar in that case? We could probably get a 2nd round pick out of it! If Ellis wasn't there then the only other player I would feel comfortable taking a shot on would be Carrethers.

We definitely need the anchor in the middle...My thoughts on Nix...I think he'll be a 1st down guy and a goal line, short yardage sub pkg player. I think we can get that kind of production from a guy like Ryan Carrethers in the 4th round.

Well I think it's safe to say that the Steelers have eliminated Safety as a priority in the draft. Mike Mitchell signed to a 5-year deal ($25mil). But after Woodley's outting, we have to add OLB to the mix.

Updated Needs:
NT, CB, WR, TE, OL, DE, OLB

There are still quite a few FA moves that the Steelers have yet to address. I expect the RB, OL & DL positions to fill out depth there. They are probably already in discussion with Woods & a RB (Dwyer or LSH?). Also a few contract extensions are looming: Ben & Pouncey. Ben is obviously the priority.

Ike was just inked to a 1 yr deal for under $3mil...I knew he would play for less to finish out in PIT...I'm starting to think they could go for Nix in the 1st round, but Gilbert could still be in play.

Tomlin was at Dennard's pro day... So my money is on a CB in the 1st

David Johnson was signed by the Chargers. That leaves Miller, Spaeth, & Paulsen. They could choose to resign Palmer, but not likely.

Also looks like we are about to lose Al Woods to the Titans

Steelers got their NT (Cam Thomas, 2yr deal). At 6'3" 330lbs he has the size, and from what I've read about him he is a true 3-4 0-technique NT. Perfect!

Now the Steelers can experiment with McLendon on the outside.

Safe to say that the Steelers are looking at CB or WR/TE in the 1st now.

Jumped the gun… The more I read about Cam Thomas, the more I think he is just a depth signing.

I read that he was benched last year due to Cincy racking up over 160 yards on the ground and he never returned the starter status. He looks more like a depth signing to me. A lot of people are comparing him to Al Woods because he has the versatility to play DE. In other words, NT could still very well be on the 1st round radar.

I've been reading that Arnfelt has been in the PIT gym facilities since the '13 season ended. I'm starting to get more and more excited to see how Arnfelt does this offseason. He could very well establish himself on the 53 with the door as wide open as it is. The Carrington visit didn't produce a contract, so I'm thinking DE is going to be one of the top 2 picks this year.

Steelers signed Whimper to a 1-year deal. They now have 8 O-lineman under contract for next season... (Pouncey, Foster, Gilbert, DeCastro, Beachum, Adams, Wallace, Whimper) Wallace, Whimper & Beachum are all transitional players, which is great considering the injury history to the position. Talent-wise there isn't great depth, but good insurance! Should be a good amount of competition during camps this offseason! Doesn't look likely that they will draft an O-lineman early. Always an option though.

Lewan, OT MICH

To piggyback on Dave Bryan's recent post.

Report: Steelers Have Done A Lot Of Research On Michigan T Taylor Lewan | Steelers Depot

The Steelers had a visit with him recently and by some accounts, there is interest in the building for the big OT...could it be Munchak's influence?

Largely considered the top 2 or 3 OT in this draft...more LT ready than Robinson. Some recent problems off the field might push him into the teens. Obviously it could be a smokescreen but...Ebron's pro day was not good, Gilbert/Dennard are needs @ CB, but I'm not sure they are top 15 talents, if Evans and Watkins are both gone...Gilbert in his contract year, not going to get much better imo...I was not excited initially, and I'm still wanting the big WR Evans, but this pick makes sense.

Your thoughts?

Lewan would be a great addition. I doubt the off-field issues will even be a big problem. I'm still on the fence about drafting OL that high when we have 8 lineman under contract already. Doesn't make sense unless it was a later rounds pick. Gilbert still has a lot of tread on the tires so I would imagine they are thinking about an extension. :noidea:
