i wouldn't mind seeing us draft a couple safeties to replace goldson and whitner. mcdonald and reid look like good fits for our d. we'd save a ton in cap space between those two and smith getting cut.

In Madden that would be an ideal move to make. However, in reality no HC in their right mind would allow two rookie safeties to play as starters. Do nor undervalue a veteran's leadership and experience that he brings to that unit - the defense as a whole.

Tyrann Mathieu/Dashon Goldson or Tyrann Mathieu/Donte Whitner. That looks much better than McDonald/Reid.

I'm not advocating for two rookie starters at S, but wasn't Earl Thomas and Kam Chanchellor drafted the same year and start together for Seattle?

He wasn't a starter. "Saw action in all 16 games as a rookie, mostly as an extra defensive back in nickel and dime packages, totaling 12 tackles including one sack. Finished second on the team with 11 special teams tackles. HONORS: 2011: NFC Pro Bowl."

i think mcdonald and reid could hold up. whitner is a lability in coverage to begin with. not to mention they're well schooled and look nfl rdy right now.

Back to this old thread...

So if there were one big, expensive free agent you think would help the 49ers the most this offseason (not including Revis 'cause he's not a FA), who would it be?

I'm thinking Mike Wallace (I know there are some good WRs in the draft, but I'm just looking at big FAs in this post).

Who do you guys think we need to resign and who will we lose?

I would love to see us work a long term deal with Goldson and RJF, Would be nice to keep Larry Grant but I think he will test the waters and look for a higher paying starting gig.

we don't NEED to re-sign any of these guys.

we'll likely lose most of these guys, maybe able to keep the good back ups in Gooden, McBath, and Williams?

Of the free agents that could make a big difference: Byrd if Goldson walks, Kicker (Bironas, etc.), Wallace, Welker, Amendola, Bowe, and Grimes.

I believe he prefers to be called Grimey.

I wouldn't be opposed to franchising Goldson for 1 more run. I wouldn't sign him long-term...

I would LOVE to sign a big name NT. But, unfortunately, there aren't any. Dallas may be willing to part with Jay Ratliff in a trade or something (or maybe cut him) because they're going to a 4-3, but I always thought he was overrated. I think the Niners' best bet is bringing Sopoaga back.

I'd be interested in bringing in Richard Seymour for a 1 or 2 year contract, but I don't know how much he'd want at this point. And I don't know how that would work out with 2 starters at DE aready there.

Isn't Tyrann Mathieu like 4 feet tall?

So was Bob Sanders. Mathieu is a playmaker, he's not an elite defensive player by any standard, but he'd be a major steal in round three and would bring us that playmaking potential that seem to have disappeared on the back end of our defense. He's great in the box either blitzing the QB or act as an extra run defender.
