So Tolzien made it over Johnson? Wahooooooooooooo!!!!

And Ian made it so far? Wahoooo!!!

So if that list is correct there are only 3 players that made it that I didn't have:

Tolzien (I predicted Johnson but hoped big time for Tolzien)

Mike Person (He was cut)

Erik Bakhtiari (This one might be the biggest surprise for me)

Originally I had Colin Jones over McBath but when he was traded I switched the two.

Really hoping they get Cam back for the PS. He was one of my favorite 49ers late picks since '98.

I hear what you're saying but my point goes beyond just the RB/FB's - Once you consider the WR's as well, it becomes risky on the defensive side of the ball and not just for actives.

I understand. Last year though we kept a LB on the roster all year who was not going to play defense. At some point in the middle of the season we added a S to the active roster who was never going to see a snap on defense.

Those two holes could be filled by Dixon and Ginn this year. Looking at the roster breakdown it doesn't seem like we're shallow at any position group. A strong argument could be made for OLB, but we rolled with only 3 of them last year.

We could probably get by with only four safeties and 6 DL.

I guess the question becomes who makes the active roster (or who doesn't to make the list shorter). For simplicity's sake I will assume everyone is healthy enough to play.

I see McBath (or Robinson), Williams and Looney (or Kilgore) being inactive. Probably Tolzien as well. There are 3 spots left for inactives.

Exactly. Right there is the wild-card. Last year we never activated more than 4 WR's and now we have 6 and I've already mentioned the RB/FB situation. So, I'm just kind of wondering aloud if we are to use all of these weapons on Sunday then how is this going to work - where are we going to roll the dice?

And, if we are to assume that Gore, Hunter & Miller are the anchors in our backfield then (if we are to inactivate a RB/FB) are we to inactivate Jacobs or James so Dixon can play ST's? I can see James to a degree but not Jacobs, and the same with the WR's. Where there was once 4 is now 6.

Anyway, I am eagerly waiting to see just how Harbaugh juggles it.

mcbath instead of a olb? honestly i'd rather bring back reggie smith than keep robinson.

there's gotta be someone on the waiver wire better than brock

Let’s try this again.

Pursuant to the conversations about our final 53, I created this table to show a side-by-side comparison of the 2011 Opening Day 53 vs. the 2012 Opening Day 53

The 'Blue' are the departed.
The 'Green' are the FNG's and the Inactive were the inactive for Opening Day 2011 (duh).

Last year our opening day split was:

Offense = 24
Defense = 26

This year our opening day split will be:

Offense = 27
Defense = 23

Enjoy!

That Excel sheet really makes you appreciate how many defensive starters and depth we are bringing back. Nothing short of amazing. The only 3 or 4 spots that changed on the D were at the bottom of the depth chart.

(Cox, Robinson and McBath... Constanzo never played D, Dobbs is still here and he'll play both ways)

Exactly! I'm a little nervous about our depth at OLB - I know we have Johnson & Wilhoite on the PS, but still a little nervous. That said, I like the possibilities our offense presents for 2012. Can't wait to get this Red & Gold Ferrari on the highway!

They cut Cam Johnson??? That's disappointing. I had high hopes for him.

My reactions exactly. So stoked for Tolzen! He must have really looked good in practice.

Wish Bak-Man could have made it. Sort of shocked he didn't as well. Especially over Celek.

I wouldn't mind seeing us pick up Everette Brown and try converting him to a 3-4 OLB. I don't like the fact that he's been cut so many times, but maybe as a situational pass rusher?

I'd rather the Niners pick up a smaller, faster OLB maybe from a 4-3 team as a backup. He's probably be too small to hold up over the long term, but he could be an influx of speed for the few plays they might need him.
