haha nope, it doesn't appear that we will

timonen
schenn
coburn
meszaros (if healthy)
streit
grossmann
gustafsson
bourdon
lauridsen
manning

is my top top 10.

This is how I got mine,

1. Timonen
2. Streit
3. Schenn
4. Coburn
5. Lauridsen

After that, they're all the same to me.

Problem is that they'll have to give up something for him and for $4 salary it's not too tempting, especially with his recent injuries. In the past I think teams would be willing to do it to meet the cap floor but the cap floor is lower than every team's salary as of now, so that makes him less appealing. IDK, I would look at some prospect that's good but unlikely to make the team (Akeson perhaps?) and package him with Meszaros in exchange for a late draft pick if I could.

Well if we do have to give up a prospect or pick with Mez, I see no way around it. I don't fully understand how Pronger's LTIR works before the season starts, and I guess we have to be cap compliant by camp

Yeah not sure what's going on with Chris Pronger. If they could put him on LTIR to save cap space this is the time to do it. Would rather do that than have to trade Meszaros & a decent prospect for essentially nothing in return.

have to be cap compliant before oct. 1st, can't LTIR pronger until oct. 1st. the flyers are still a trade that we all (aside from doob) will hate, away from being able to start the season, let alone signing gagne.. to be honest, i kinda see them trading coburn.. they shouldnt, but no team is going to help them out by taking mesz or grossmann.. they have sizable cap hits and are injury prone

They should make sure they're compliant on Oct 1st. I think they are in big trouble if they end up trading Braydon Coburn. It shouldn't have to ever come to that unless they're trading him to get better. I say just be compliant on Oct 1st, put Pronger on LTIR, and not worry about packaging players with prospects and trading them for nothing. That makes no sense if putting Pronger on LTIR is an option.

Tye McGinn might be the 14th best forward on the Flyers but he delivers a pretty hard forecheck. I think they should keep him on the roster for that reason alone. Flyers can't be soft this year.

I have Oliver Lauridsen as the 5th dman on the Flyers (contracts aside). We probably won't agree on anything here.

It's not going to be a soft team with or without McGinn. There is physicality everywhere with the Schenn brothers, Hartnell, Simmonds, Rinaldo and at least Grossmann. You could probably even list a couple others, but that's a very strong base.

thats what i'm saying, LTIR-ing pronger is NOT an option to be compliant on oct 1st.. have to be compliant before you can LTIR players

True, that is good size, physicality, & toughness.

they have to trade someone. that's the only thing they can do as far as i know. that's why the trade is going to be a bad trade for the flyers.. they've done stuff like this before where they back themselves in to a corner in late september

Wow, that sucks. I was thinking they just had to fill out some paperwork.

I guess putting Pronger on LTIR doesn't really help. I guess the best option is to package Meszaros with a prospect and trade him for a draft pick or something like that.

I think they will be ok. If I remember correctly, they are over the cap by 2.2 mil after Pronger's LTIR. Now, technically, I think they can still place Courturier, Schenn, Laughton, Bourdon, Gervais and Gustafsson on the Phantoms to get under the cap. Then place Pronger on LTIR. Then call up Courturier, Schenn and Laughton. They are in good shape either way I think. It's just a matter of shuffling the cards on 10/1.

LOL that's funny. If that's what they could do, that's what I would do. Seems sort of goofy, but that's how I would play it if I were them.

The Flyers admitted at the end of last season that they needed to get bigger up front, which isn't necessarily the same as needing to get more physical.

Yeah, if they had more guys like Simmonds who could set such good screens, their offense would probably be the best in the league.

I really like how Simmonds sets screens. He's so massive and strong you can't really move him, and if you try to deny him position he'll just push up against you, forcing you to push back, then he just twirls around you. If he could just get better at deflecting shots into net like how Tomas Holmstrom used to be able to do, then I think Wayne Simmonds would easily be the best screen setter in the NHL.

Very true, Doob. Maybe they should bring Knuble back as some type of special coach to work with Simmonds on that.

Yeah, or bring in Tomas Holmstrom to coach him on it, he was one of the best at that. He's retired now I believe.

the couturier and schenn contracts are mostly bonus laiden, but they're not cheap contracts when the year starts because they take the maximum possible salary if all bonuses are attained.. i'm not sure how that works with waivers and the AHL now that you can't bury contracts in the minors. you only get like 900k of savings for moving ANY player, regardless of salary, to the minors. so if the bonuses still count, which i'm guessing they do, you only save 1.8 mil with schenn/couturier.

touche Eville, just checked out cap geek and they can do it this way, if cap geek is correct.

Homer is not going to trade Meszaros just for shits and giggles and no return if he doesn't have to and trust me, he doesn't have to. Hell, if he can stay healthy for a change, he may even be our 3rd or 4th best option on defense. That sort of depth would be great to have given the disaster of last season with regard to injuries.

The cap deficit is only right at $2 million, which means only three to four players with two-way contracts would have to be sent down to the Phantoms briefly to be compliant come the 1st of October. Then you enact the Pronger LTIR and bring them right back up. Suddenly you have close to $3 million in available space, which is a lot to work with come trade deadline time.
