I think it's a good statistic and I refer to it in some of my posts, but I wouldn't describe myself as a "big WAR guy". I use it as any reasonable person would and don't treat it as an end-all.

In the AL, I'd have probably voted something like
Pedroia
Morneau
Mauer
Longoria
Youk

I remember really thinking Longoria was going to win an MVP someday after he was so great after his call-up. I was (am) a big Twins fan and I didn't want Pedroia to win it, blaming his numbers on Fenway, but he hit pretty well on the road and Mauer had huge H/R splits that year. It was insane. Hard not to vote for him. Generally, I don't think MVP should go to the best player (probably Mauer) but I try to combine things like WAR, games played (huge for me), and clutch stats (runs added, WPA etc) that measure what happened (I don't care if they aren't predictive going forward since the award is for things actually done). Guys like Youk and Morneau measured up pretty well there. And Mauer tried to fucking bunt in the late innings in game 163.

I don't remember the NL enough to remember how I would have voted. Probably for Pujols since he was so much better than everyone else it wasn't worth debating. I think that was a weird year where the best teams had lots of solid performances but some crappy teams had some amazing single season performances (Pujols, Berkman, Jones).
