I already acknowledged last years Blue Jays, who went and got Price and Tulo. I also stated that I used the word "usually" and not "always". Most teams are out looking for a reliever or one more bat. With the advent of the wild card (and now the 2nd wild card) fewer teams are sellers in-season, and there's just not as many blockbuster deals. Even when big names move, they don't always have the huge impact people expect them to have.

I'm not saying trade deadline guys NEVER EVER impact a race, I'm just saying it's not the normal order of business for a big trade to suddenly change the course of a season. The 2015 Blue Jays happen from time to time, I just don't see that as a normal thing.

2015 royals got Cueto + zobrist
2014 giants got Peavy
2013 red sox got peavy
2012 giants got Pence:suds:

I'm a wordy motherfucker.

I just browsed through the deadline deals through 2012 when the 2nd wild card was introduced. Some big names changing hands each year.

Not all deadline deals are big-impact, but I think more often than not, some team pulls a game changer each season.

but they didnt win the WS:suds:

I did not know that was the criteria. I was looking for "blockbuster" deals where a big name moved.

The playoffs are a crapshoot. Once you're in, anything can happen. I'd even say that the best team in a given year usually doesn't win the World Series.

When the '15 Royals traded for Zobrist and Cueto, they were already 9 games up in the division. Barring an epic collapse, they were going to win the division anyways. I know Cueto was good for the Royals, but I thought that trade was questionable. They gave up a lot to get him, and they already had that division LOCKED.

In 2008, Sabathia single-handedly dragged the fuck-ball Brewers into the post season.

Sabathia should have been the NL Cy Young in 2008. I think he had like 8 complete games and 3 or 4 shutouts and 11 wins in like 15 starts.

Lucroy will be traded in the next few days. Brewers GM is probably holding onto him a bit too long trying to get more than he's worth. Maybe he'll get lucky and get a haul for him. Not a lot of .850 OPS catchers out there that are available right now.

So u werent watching in 2011 when 2 teams with 11 game lead on 8/31 didnt make the playoffs and i dont think royals win it all without cueto and zobrist:suds:

No doubt. Plus, the last three starts of the season were all done on three-days rest. That guy's a bad ass.

I really did not think much of Finnegan or Lamb as pitchers and especially thought Finnegan would be a dumpsterfire of a pitcher (I don't think the Royals were as enamored with him as many outside the organization) which he has been so far in Cincinnati. Giving up Manaea and Reed generate much more handwringing on my part however.

Maybe, maybe not. Cueto was great in the post season. Also the Mets rolled over in the WS. I think they had a lead in every single game, IIRC.

I don't know what to say about 2 teams blowing 11 game leads with a month to go. I think that's happened like 5 times ever in like 115+ years.

Who cares what they gave up when they got a banner in return.

THat's alright, you guys got LoCain and A. Escobar for a 1 1/2 year rental of Zach Greinke and fucking Yuniesky Betancourt. Watching Yuni B play SS for a whole season was worse than getting 27 root canals.

Giving away Manaea in particular I am not thrilled about. I was pretty high on him if he could stay healthy. Felt they could've done a smaller move and gotten most of Zobrist's production anyways.

it is possible to overpay in trades and win the WS. The Cueto trade is plenty defensible right now. Everything is rosy when it comes up rings, but I am not too big a fan of Dayton Moore going forward. His offseason this year is an unmitigated disaster.
