It's so hard to pick against Joe D, but I had to.

The greatest hitter of all time, Ted

What about Mickey in his healthy years, vs Willie

People say that a healthy Mickey Mantle was the greatest player ever

For all the discussion of Mantle, Mays, and Snider in the 50s, Mays blows the other two away. Mantle was my dads hero and he will tell you that for what Mays did on the field he was the better player.

Duke Snider was a great ball player but not really in the conversation. Mays may have been better than Mantle but he definitely didn't blow him away. I would side with Mantle though.

I HATE voting for a Sinstriper over a Red Sox player but Williams was simply not as complete a ballplayer
as DiMaggio was and seemingly didn't care about it.

If the Sinstripes had been willing to swap the 2 straight up Tom Yawkey should have said "Done deal!" And thrown in a "Thank you!"

I don't think I'd take any player ever over a healthy Mickey Mantle

Had to go with Ted. Tough choice, though.

Tobad about Roberto Clemente. The things he could have done.

If not for Dimaggio hating the kid, and a certain sprinkler hole in 1951, it would likely be Mantle by a good margin.

What if........

From the replies I would have to say I was wrong about how lopsided the Mantle Mays discussion would be.

It is in the what if factor that I just mentioned that causes there to still be doubt in the "right" answer. Much like that is applied to Williams. Not here, in the comparison to DiMaggio, but in general and overall, and in respect to what his final numbers might have been if he had not serverd our country twice.

Well, he's better in my book because he did serve his country - twice over. :10:

At their major league peaks they were about the same, but if you were to look at their 5 best years, it's probably Mays.

In Mays' 5 best seasons he had a 11.2, 11.1, 10.6, 10.6, and 10.5 WAR
In Mantle's 5 best seasons he had 11.3, 11.3, 10.5, 9.5 and 8.7

So what? Frank Thomas wasn't as 'complete a player' as Don Mattingly but you're not convincing anyone that Mattingly was better.

Williams' offensive advantage easily makes up for any gap in defense/baserunning that DiMaggio had. Williams' 5 best offensive seasons are probably better than DiMaggio's best offensively...that's how big the gap was.

It's sort of odd, because as much as you claim to "hate" doing it I've read you putting down Williams about a jillion times before on this board.
