Been thinking of getting a 4 cylinder car to buzz back and forth to work in rather than driving my truck every day. Something used and not too expensive. Found an 05 Chevy cobalt with 102k miles on it. Looks to be in good shape. I'm gonna go look at it tonight. Guys asking 2,800 obo on it. Looks like a decent option to suit what I'm looking for. Any of you guys know any reason I should steer clear of this car? Anything I need to know?

I don't know much about them really. I had a new 2000 Cavalier and liked it pretty good and this is basically the same thing.

This might be worth a look too...

I knew a guy 20 years ago that had a Chevy Lumina and put over 200k on it. Then bought another one and put over 200k on it.

I think that's the exception and not the rule with GM cars.
I'd steer clear and buy a Honda.
But for under $2800, how can you go wrong.

LOL @ people thinking 200k is a lot on a good vehicle. An old 12 valve Cummins or a 7.3 Powerstroke aren't even broke in good at 200K. Same with the Chrysler 4.0 straight 6's, the 22r 4 cylinder Toyota's.

Yeah. I'll probably stick with Honda. This car was too good to be true anyways. Lied to me and said it had never been in a wreck when I clearly saw paint runs and overspray. Politely said no thanks

Even Consumer Reports, who notoriously hates American cars, disagrees with that and is awarding Ford, GM and Chrysler cars as Best in Class right and left. It makes zero sense for an American to pay more money for a foreign, inferior product.

Are you working for ISIS?

Anybody that actually pays attention knows that is completely wrong.
Those 3 brands may have gotten better over the past 40 years, but they still lag behind Honda, Toyota, Nissan, VW.

And the reason we know that Ford and Chevy are fucking you over???
Because they make great trucks that run forever, but their cars start having problems at 50,000 miles.
They have done it for generations and people like you get all huffy puffy about BUY AMERICAN.

It cracks me up.

You are usually spot on regarding these motor vehicle threads, but this time you are...out of your mind...

Years ago, maybe. But for the past 10+ years, you really can't buy anything bad.

Bullshit.. my mother had a 99 camry that due to a defective pcv design gummed up the entire works causing a rod knock... I had to roll rod and main bearings into it, just so she could get rid of the piece of shit. Thing had like 54K on it and Toyota said it needed a new engine.

My 2000 cherokee had 218K or something like that when I got rid of it. My 01 F150 with the shitty v6 I currently drive has 140K with only one somewhat major repair (intake manifold gaskets) which would have cost like 700 bucks to get done if I couldn't do it myself. Haven't had to do shit to that thing but routine maint.

I'm rolling at 160K miles with my '07 Malibu. Ugly ass car, but she's been pretty good to me.

You can find shit like this for any car. There are exceptions always. Fact is, the Hondas and toyotas are more reliable. They didn't get that reputation for no reason.

It's a myth perpetuated by Consumer Reports.. Japanese cars are not more reliable, it's confirmation bias.

The CR survey may over/understate the reliability of certain cars because the people that own them are not homogeneous. ... many people will have a subconscious need to justify their purchase of a Japanese auto over of a domestic one, and they could do this by believing superior reliability is the reason they bought it. Because of cognitive dissonance, they would tend to overlook or downplay anything that would attack this mind-set. We do see many people who vehemently defend Japan's cars' reliability and smear that of others."

Go German or go home.

I've had 5 Fords (SHO, Super Coupe, Contour, Capri V6, Ranger 4x4), 2 Toyota Camrys, 3 VWs (71 Beetle, 79 Rabbit, 73 Westphalia Camper), 1 Chevy S-10, 1 AMG Benz and 1 Audi A4.

The Germans win in a landslide. Ignoring the 70's VW saga I went through.

Not sure what you mean here about a myth.

I agree today companies are catching up, but it isn't just CR taking piles of hush money like you try and make it out to be. It's JD Power, BBC investigations.... Heck, Warranty direct which does engine warranty in the UK says 9 most often replaced motors are all European cars. VW, BMW and Audi are all in that group. Least often replaced? Honda and Toyota. Money.uk rated the top most reliable cars... top of the list, Honda, Toyota, Mazda. Bottom, Porshe, Audi, Merc, BMW. Insurance companies have rated cars by claims, same results. It isn't just people skewing surveys, but ACTUAL REPLACEMENT DATA too.

It isn't consumer reports saying it, it is their direct competitors in the US and abroad saying the same thing backed up with facts behind them.

Yes everyone will have their own experiences. But if my mom got shot by a nun, that doesn't make nun's the most dangerous group of people in the world, even if in my personal situation that is true.
