NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the NFLPA has made an economic counterproposal to the league regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amongst the Union's proposals: No escrow of 2020 salaries, a flat 2021 salary cap of $198.2 million, "spread revenue loss this year over 2022-2030 caps" and "all fully guaranteed money paid even if games are canceled." Only the last idea may be a non-starter, but none of this will be automatic. This is the dialogue that needs to be happening, but it's astounding it did not begin sooner. The supposed training camp report date of July 28 is only 11 days away. Profootballtalk reports the sides hope to have an agreement by next Tuesday or Wednesday.
ESPN's Dianna Russini reports the NFL and NFLPA have yet to formally agree on a July 28 report date for training camp.
Per Russini, "the league and the player’s union have not agreed on dates of reporting for camp or prior dates for testing of COVID-19." The league probably has the unilateral ability to make players report, but as we saw with Major League Baseball, leagues would like to avoid using that kind of power at a time like this. Players like J.J. Watt have made the case that camp should only begin when both sides are truly ready, and that the downsides of rushing an arbitrary report date far outweigh the benefits.

There's no damn way the league pays players if no games are played. What gets interesting are contracts. If they don't play do the players earn a contract year?
Take Prescott for instance, he's on the FT, if they don't play can the team still lock him in at the 2020 FT price in 21?

No season, no pay seems logical. The FT status likely ends up being negotiated.

Thisis very complicated. I write contracts for a living. Whenever there are issues that are not expected, not addressed SPECIFICALLY, it will be subject to negotiation, courts, even public opinion.....

I can see why the players would think they should still be paid if theres no games. They wont be the ones cancelling the games. Still wont happen imo but i see why theyd say it should

It’s because most of them don’t won’t to play imo. They’d rather get involved in politics and riots. All in the while destroying the fan base that gets them payed

Those of you expecting any semblance of a regular season as we know it are in for a disappointment. A deal will be very difficult to get worked out, then you will start seeing the same thing we are seeing in other sports as players will continue to drop out and decline to play. There is simply no way to make a full contact sport perfectly safe and players will be concerned about that. Next you have the issue of positive tests putting 1/2 of the starting defense in quarantine for 2 weeks and being replaced by guys off the street.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the league has proposed a $40 million reduction to the 2020 salary cap of $198.2 million.
The laughable proposal would necessitate widespread veteran releases and contract re-negotiations. You can probably guess the NFLPA's response: "Lol." The union wants to spread the hit out over multiple future seasons. As Profootballtalk's Mike Florio points out, the players have zero obligation to negotiate the 2020 cap. The "mutual duty to bargain" does not kick in until 2021. It is entirely predictable that the league is trying to spread out the unforeseen losses, something it would never do with unforeseen gains. As was the case with Major League Baseball's coronavirus negotiations, this has the potential to get ugly in a hurry. It is mind boggling that the process was not ramped up sooner.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the league wants coronavirus opt out decisions from players by August 1.
It is yet another surprisingly aggressive, antagonistic posture from a league that seems to have just realized it has a million tough choices looming in the near future. The idea that on-the-fence players — whether because of a pre-existing health condition or family member's condition — will have clarity on their 2020 feelings just days into camp isn't remotely realistic. As was the case in Major League Baseball, a process that screams out for unity is quickly devolving into the typical hardball negotiating tactics.

CBS' Jason La Canfora reports "several" general managers do not expect training camp to begin "on time" as scheduled July 28.
Word leaked Thursday evening that the Chiefs and Texans — who get to start early since they're playing in the season-opening Thursday night game — were requiring rookies and certain veterans to report Monday, but the league and NFLPA seem miles apart in multiple critical coronavirus negotiations. July 28 is definitely seeming aspirational at this point, but the league continues to try to pretend it's situation normal.

Well if Diana Russini reported it than it must be true she must have sucked a powerful dick to get that information

Yeah this is going to be a mess to much for me to wrap my head around so my response is just one man's opinion.

If there are no games and if the league does not pay them I feel the year should still count as a contract year. Perhaps they can consider paying the Vet min to players. Teams will demand players still maintain their bodies and workouts seems this should be considered.

Theyll figure it out. TV money alone covers 80-85% of the cap plus owners will save money not needing 4-5k people working every game day and theyll still get ad revenue for TV placement at home games. Just between that stuff the cap is probably covered . Youre not going to risk future earnings as an owner just to try to make a pittance this year

This assume it's only about protecting fans. Players are at direct risk as well as coaches, managers, equipment teams, doctors etc. And locker rooms are already petre dishes. Im not sure players are willing to risk there health and life for a game

n coordinated Twitter postings Sunday afternoon, a host of NFL players criticized the league's coronavirus plan.
More specifically, the league's lack of a plan. "If the NFL doesn’t do their part to keep players healthy there is no football in 2020," were the words of Drew Brees, amongst many others. Players from J.J. Watt to Russell Wilson took part in the effort. In Watt's post, he said players still do not know how a positive COVID-19 test will be handled, or how the league might handle opt-outs. The league is still trying to claim players will report as usual this week, but the number of unresolved critical issues is massive.

The big question is, why are the two sides just now starting to work out these details? They've had months to be working on this
