My question for Ken Holland is does he really think another, much better opportunity elsewhere won’t open up in the next year? You don’t even have to look very far - there’s a good chance one or both of the jobs in Calgary or Vancouver open up in the next 12 months and either job would be infinitely more attractive than this nightmare.

But even if not, there’s maybe, like, 3 jobs I would view as inferior to Edmonton. That leaves you 28 (29 if he’s content to not have a team playing for another year after next) possible jobs, any of which would be less personally destructive than this one would be. Why bother?

I'm surprised it's only $5M per season

"willing to accept the job" is interesting phrasing - I guess it's tough to get excited when the destination is Edmonton.

Working for Edmonton is eerily similar to working in the Whitehouse right now. Sure fire way of ruining whatever reputation you had.

Honestly wish Holland luck, as funny as the Oilers’ ineptitude has been the past decade+ I think the league is much better with its best player playing on a successful team and I hope to see it happen.

I agree with the needing the best player on a good team.

And Holland is good, but is he good enough to fix Edmonton? Holland's strength is drafting, and it's not likely he's bringing his scouting staff with him. Even if he did, that's 5-7 years before it bears fruit.

Milan Lucic @ 6m until 2023
Adam Larsson @4.2m until 2021
Kris Russell @4m until 2021
Mikkop Koskinen @ 4.5m until 2022

And he has 9 Free Agents to sign with 800K in space. And literally the only contracts he has that people would take is RNH, Drai or McDavid. the only pieces he should hold onto. AND it's seeming like the organization wants him to teach Gretzky so he will be mentoring the guy who will push him out of a job and take credit for any success that happens.

Kenny, what are you thinking?

Like I said in an earlier post, I’m not sure what is so alluring about this job either for him but after roasting the Pens for hiring Rutherford and then watching him deliver two Cups I’m not going to rip anything until there’s evidence to do so.

I don’t think their roster or commitments are so bad that they’re all 100% unmoveable. He does have whatever draft knowledge for this year that the Wings researched which should help. This will be very interesting to see unfold.

As long as MacT and KLown are still hanging around, I don't see much changing to be honest.
Despite the mess the Oil are in they've finished ahead of Detroit 3 years in a row.

They can argue they're the more recently-successful people in the room lol

yeah, i don't see all the love for Holland.
he's leaving the Redwings as a bottom 5 team, spending to the cap (albeit with a bunch of LTIR), with a pretty bare prospect cupboard beyond the top 3. (Zadino, Veleno, Rasmussen)

so, in that context he should be pretty comfortable with what he's getting into

Yeah the prospect thing has been pretty weird in the media - I keep hearing some version of "well, he's drafted very well in the last few years"; for starters, the only way to determine that is if a bunch of prospects have cracked the NHL and made an impact. Unless they mean Larkin and AA I'm going to need more than 10 games from Taro Hirose to jump to that conclusion.

Even Zadina - not saying he's bad but compared to William Nylander at the same age he didn't exactly light up the AHL and given who was taken immediately after he was there's going to be a bit more pressure for him to develop into a great player.

So if we're going back to Larkin's draft year that's, what, at best 6 good prospects or developed players over a 5 year span of mostly bad hockey and high picks? That's pretty average. It's a lot like the Mark Hunter "draft guru" reputation he earned for having picked Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews and then a bunch of big slow defencemen and no-name Russians. Reporters love an easy adjective.
