They weren't going after a MORP if they were gonna get a starter. It would have been Chris Sale or the trades they ended up making. They weren't willing to give up 2 of the big 3 in order to do the deal for Sale.

In a playoff series, if you roll out Hammels, Darvish, Sale...well good luck to the other team. The bigger kicker for Sale is that he's on a very club friendly contract for multiple years still. So, in the event they cannot re-sign Darvish, they still have a powerful 1-2 with Hammels and Sale. That was the thinking anyhow. Obviously didn't happen, but i would have been cool with that too had it worked out.

Remember when philly had Haladay, Lee, and Hamels and didn't even get past the NLDS? You need a solid rotation in the playoffs, but I'd argue a shut down pen is more important.

A funny comment I read on an Astros board after the trade deadline :

"How do the Rangers get people to drop their no trade clauses so easily? Is it the traffic? Large amounts of people from Oklahoma? Or the shitty food"

I guess the guy didn't pay attention to the fact that Lucroy could only block certain teams from acquiring him.

Lol at the Astros. Reminds me of the OU/OSU rivalry. OSU hates OU with a fiery passion. OU considers OSU an annoyance and an afterthought.

Eh, tough to say what is more important. A shut down pen is great as long as you can get to it with a lead. If you're losing big then it doesn't matter if you have Rivera in your pen.

Having a good balance throughout the team seems to be the safest bet. Some teams have won it with dominant pitching or hitting and mediocre other areas, but sustained success seems to be about balance.

OU is the national program with a history of winning championships and OSU is known for? T Boone Pickens? Yea.... It sounds like hate is all they have.

Which the Rangers seem to have in spades. Especially once Colby gets healthy. I'd wager JD picks up a #4 type pitcher before the waiver deadline as well. A playoff rotation that starts with Hamels, Darvish, and Lewis is pretty imposing.

No need. Already have several #3-4s with Colby, Perez, Griffin, Holland, and Harrell...assuming Colby and Holland get healthy.

There's really no other moves they need to make. I don't see any glaring holes.

I wonder how a combo #3 in the playoffs would work if Lewis was not back. Like Perez/Griffin. Just get about 3-4 good innings out of them before they blow up. They could let it rip that way and not have to pace themselves. May sound crazy but I have seen it work multiple times where all relievers pitch a game.

Yeah, you are right. They do not take all the days off the NBA does between games. Sure seems stud pitchers would get pitch 3 games of a 7 game series in the past.

The postseason is such a different animal than the regular season, I'll never understand the hard-on people have for "rotation stats."

In October, you need a good rotation, a great offense, and a killer bullpen.

And be hot at the right time.

I expect them to make a bigger splash in the international J2 signings next summer. That will restock the pond.
Select high quality position players and then trade them for upper tier pitching prospects. :)

Developing one would be nice, but I see mostly 3s and lower right now, maybe a 2 if things go right, we've been pretty successful at accumulating talent in bulk and packaging it for TORPs
What do the Cards and Rays do different in the amateur draft since it seems they develop SPs better than the rest?

He was goaded into an emotional response. People kept bugging him about the Rangers and essentially chastised them for giving up young talent to make the club better and that you shouldn't be so quick to judge trades as winners now. He's still a tender from the Gomez and Giles trades.
Bet he laughed at the walk off last night against Feldmen. :)

We have been really bad at developing top of the rotation type pitchers over the past few years. I believe one of the problems we had was when we thought we had to take really good starters from the minors and use them in the pen instead of going out and getting bullpen pieces in the offseason. When Feliz and Holland came up they were really bad at doing that. I would have loved to have seen what Feliz could have been had they let him stay at AAA all year the year he came up. I would have liked to have seen him stay in AAA all year working on his secondary pitches. Hopefully those days are over.

They draft so many pitchers and can't develop them properly most of the time it seems.

You make a good point but I believe Feliz would always be a reliever.

Live and learn. I think they've learned their lesson from that.
