That's the Jason Grilli I remember. Tigers actually get a well-pitched game from some unlikely sources.

We need all the unlikely sources that we can get

STARTING PITCHERS
Detroit Tigers
RH Anibal Sanchez (5-9, 6.52 ERA)
Lifetime vs. Blue Jays: 3-2, 4.17 ERA (7 starts)

Toronto Blue Jays
RH R.A. Dickey (6-9, 4.90 ERA)
Lifetime vs. Tigers: 8-3, 4.01 ERA (13 starts)

The Tigers can split their series against the Blue Jays and finish their 11-game road trip 7-4 with a win today, but it could get hairy with Sanchez on the mound. Sanchez is 3-8 with a 7.23 ERA and 1.682 WHIP in 13 games this season as a starter, including 0-6 in his last eight.

* Sanchez's last win as a starter came April 28 vs. Oakland -- a two-run, three-hit outing in which he lasted 5 2/3 innings. His last win on the road? April 6 vs. Miami, the second game of the season.

I don't get why they keep sending Sanchez out there? Seems Greene would be a better option. I know he hasn't started for awhile but Sanchez?

Today's game is a toss up.. Hopefully Sanchez gives it all he's got

If Zimmermann comes back healthy, the Tigers still lack two starting pitchers that would give them an edge to reach the post season. Zimmermann (healthy), Fulmer, and Verlander are a good - not great - threesome. But after that, it is hit and miss. Norris, Boyd, Sanchez, and Pelfrey cannot be relied upon.

Oh, I know...people will say, "Hey, Boyd pitched well Saturday! Maybe HE is the answer." And, "Pelfrey's last two games weren't two bad." Well....OK. If you want to gamble on a couple of these guys (and Zimmermann's health) to get you to a Wild Card spot, or better...Good Luck. Personally, I'd like to see the Head Hanchos land one, and preferably two, credible starting pitchers for August and September. Easier said than done. I just don't see the collection of starting pitchers they have now being able to win enough games to see October.

Sanchez walks the #9 hitter, gives up a single on an 0-2 pitch to the next guy, then serves up a 3-run bomb to Donaldson on an 0-1 pitch.

He has no put-away pitch at all this year. None.

I don't blame the Tigers for mailing it in because that goddamn bum is on the mound.

Here are some starting pitchers said to be available this month....

Jake Odorizzi (Rays), Ervin Santana (Twins), Julio Teheran (Braves), Drew Pomeranz (Padres). Also these pitchers
are available and might come slightly cheaper, as they will be free agents: Jeremy Hellickson (Phillies), Rich Hill (A's), Jon Niese (Pirates), Matt Moore (Rays). There are some more, but these may be the best. No superstars like David Price available this time around.

Unlikely that Detroit will be in on Teheran and Hill....Tiger's don't have the top level prospects for them. Ditto with Pomeranz if Padres really do want to trade him. Santana is dependable but is signed for 2 more years at $13.5 a year. I'd like to see the Tigers go after Hellickson (half year rental) and Niese, a lefty. Niese has a $10mil option for 2017, but with a cheap buyout...which gives the Tigers two ways to go, depending on how he pitches.

Reading that article, I can see why the Tigers continue to use Aviles and Romine as outfield backups. How's this for organizational depth:

AAA Stats

Gose = .185 BA with 75 strikeouts in 50 games

JaCoby Jones = .214 in 33 games (he was hitting .312 in AA before promotion)

Tyler Collins = .213 in 66 games

Wynton Bernard = .235 in 46 games (he's since been demoted to AA)

Damn...that was freaky. Howie, I was just typing out the EXACT same post. When I clicked on the "Alert" for your post....I thought it was mine. The only difference..I didn't mention Romine.

Lloyd also pulled JaCoby Jones from the first game of Saturday's DH....supposedly for not running out a pop up.

Looks like you might have to chalk up another bad trade for Dombrowski

DD definitely left the cupboard pretty bare in the minor league system, through trades (some good, some not so good) and poor drafting.

A couple of weeks ago you were pushing for Jacoby Jones as the next great tiger.

I guess you have an axe to grind. I said Jones might make a good option as a fourth outfielder or as a replacement for Moya if he couldn't handle playing the outfield. Nowhere did I say he would be the ''next great Tiger''.
