People will point out his 3.97 ERA as a sign that he hasn't been that dominant, but if you look deeper at the numbers, there's a lot to like...

1.07 WHIP (best since 2012)
K/BB = 3.70 (also best since 2012)
K/9 = 9.6 (best since 2009)
7.0 hits/9 IP (best since 2011)

The ERA is elevated mainly due to two really horrible starts (yes, Smitty, I know they all count), and his home run rate. The most HR that JV has allowed in a season is 24. He's on pace to give up 28-29 this season.

8 QS in his last 10. (9 out of 12 on the season). Nobody likes Quality Starts as a stat, but it's worth mentioning with JV this year.

Like run differential, ERA gets skewed by that one outlier. Like tonights 11-0 butt whoopin'.

JV is looking good, consistently. Honestly didn't think we'd see a 1/3 of season like this from him again. Hope he keeps it up.

JV, Zim, Fulmer is a real nice1-2-3 right now.

I'll say. His 22.1 consecutive scoreless innings is the best for a rookie starter in Tigers history, surpassing the 20 consecutive scoreless frames Verlander logged in 2006.

Ausmus is messing with my ''Bench Boys" lately. He has Romine in the lineup tonite. I want to see the One Hundred Club on the bench so I can admire the .154, .180, .192, batting averages of Romine, Aviles, and McCann. (Or Salty's .192). I just love the way our GM has put our manager in a position to basically have NO pinch hitters on the bench when it is manned by the ''Bench Boys''! The team should make them wear Bench Boy T-Shirts. (When McCann starts, he can give his T-Shirt to Salty.

Agreed, I'm thinking What's Maybin batting like 400? Dude is and Ausmus benches him.......Romine can't hit slow pitch softball, no excuse for Romine to be in place of Maybin......
