Last year, Lael Collins, who was projected as mid- to early first round pick fell all the way out of the draft due to some bogus rumors linking him to the murder of the mother of his child. When it came down to our seventh round pick, we took a flier on Austin Reiter. I'm still baffled by that. Does anyone have any idea why we didn't use our seventh rounder on Collins instead of Reiter? He would've been slotted at left guard and would've filled a question mark at that position.

Any thoughts?

My guess is he was never a first round pick at all. He was likely a fourth rounder and Dallas took the undrafted flier.

There were 32 teams who didn't take him. You say it was bogus but I am betting there were obvious links. Also, I don't believe he has ever been cleared but he was never charged.

I doubt that. He was pretty legit in college and did nothing to disprove that last year. NFL teams freaked out and overreacted to something like they tend to do and as a result the Cowboys got another great young lineman for basically free. :L

:agree: Even if he was a fourth round talent (which he wasn't) or had some links to that incident, a seventh round pick is basically a throw-away. Why not take a chance with a kid with that much upside?

Yea really. I would've been happy if we spent a 4th on him let alone a 7th.

Was he good last season? People claim the Dallas line is great but didn't their QB get knocked out twice last season? A veteran QB gets killed twice and the line is great?

On the play where Romo was injured against Carolina, Collins left his area to help Tyron Smith who had his guy under control leaving a gap for the defense to get to Romo. If Collins wasn't overrated in predraft talk, he would have been drafted as a T.

Personally, I think that entire OL is overrated.

I'm not sure 2 hits proves anything, Collins was pretty good last year.

They have a good line. The trouble is that Romo isn't as elusive as he once was. Witten isn't a quick as he once was and Dez is always nursing a foot issue. The other scrubs aren't worth mentioning. It'll be the same this year but Elliott will help out some.

Jerry "I don't care if you're a thief woman puncher or whatever,, can you play football" Jones, loves to take chances on questionable characters. Dez, Hardy, Collins, Brent, Randall etc... Some work out some don't. When you're desperate for success it usually doesn't find you.

My take is we aren't tumbling into mediocrity because we didn't pick up Collins . Long allowed like one sack and 2 pressures all year . What else do you want?

Guy who is brought in the day before the draft, to be questioned about the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend...

A case mind you that is still open and he has not been ruled out as being involved....

Yea Im actually glad we have a GM that is not so desperate that he is willing to ignore ALL of field issues because of a guys perceived talent level. Sure Dallas might have gotten a great one on the cheap. Or they might have gotten a kid who was looking at having to pay the DNA tax for the next 18 years as a first rounder and figured, being in Chicago at the time of the murder was the perfect alibi.

So no sir Im not upset at all that we totally passed on him.

But . . . if we did take him, we'd only spend a 7th rounder and pay him accordingly. If things go south for any reason, we wouldn't blink at cutting a seventh rounder, which is what I believe happened with Austin Reiter. The question really is who you'd want between Lael Collins or Reiter. The answer to that question is abundantly clear.

I keep seeing people post, we need to trust our GM. Now for some reason our GM and every other GM for that matter passed on drafting this kid. I could MAYBE see giving him the benefit of the doubt on the whole police questioning thing.

But the moment he came out and said, If im not drafted in the top two rounds, I will refuse to sign... to me thats a big red flag. Had we drafted him in the 7th and he actually refused to sign, its a wasted draft pick... no matter its a 7th rounder.

Scot made a judgement call. Now Dallas might have gotten a steal on this one. But in this case, Im not mad at Scot for passing on him. Because I find it a tad bit questionable that this kids pregnant ex who was naming him the father gets gunned down while he has the perfect alibi. As nothing was taken, this to me looks like a planned hit. So just as I said during the draft, Im glad we passed on him.... just in case he was involved.

His agents threatened that he would sit out the season and enter the 2016 draft if any team selected him after the third round. The Boyz signed him to a 3 year deal totaling 1.6 mil. One of the few smart things they did last year.

While I agree with you, it is more about philosophy. Some GMs are risk averse when it comes to character. A murder charge, against a woman, who is/was your girlfriend in today's media environment will turn some organizations completely off...because football is a business. While there is no risk in taking a higher talent player in the seventh round from a talent aspect, there is significant risk to that player being a locker room and media issue.

I agree there is little risk with taking Collins in the seventh, and it is a move I would have made, but I am not going to lose sleep over not taking a possible murderer who can ruin the locker room.

But the issue is risk. If you take him with a seventh round pick and the salary that goes with it, why not?
