That was why avila was a nice backup... he still was solid defensively.

Yes, and I hope McCann takes the time to learn hitters the way Avila did. Alex always did a great job calling pitches.

So we're all in agreement, McCann will not improve a lineup?

Okay, good, great, grand. Moving on....

Yep. And I think the 1 thru 6 hitters, plus Iggy at 9, will be so good that McCann doesn't HAVE to improve the lineup.

Before I was interrupted: The Rotation

Zimmerman
Verlander
Sanchez
Pelfry
Norris

Figuring Fulmer won't be ready at the start of the season, nor will Shane Greene, the rotation depth appears to be Farmer, Boyd, and Ryan. With Sanchez an injury risk, Norris' health a question, and the possibility of Verlander contracting 'areola rash'....I am wondering if the Tigers need to seriously consider adding some experienced starter to their spring training roster. Has anyone heard if they have made a minor league signing of a starting pitcher that I missed? (BTW...has Matt Boyd dropped off the face of the Earth? Have heard very little about him this winter.)

I'm sure Boyd is in the mix as a second or third option if there are injuries, but I think moreso they are probably counting on Greene to bounce back and be that #6 guy. His poor performance last year had a lot to do with some nagging injury issues. A cheap "handcuff" with MLB experience would be nice, but I don't know how many such pitchers are out there and worth pursuing.

Um... Shane Greene and Fulmer will both be in the starting rotation in Toledo and will be available if needed.... what are you talking about?

word is that Greene is also being considered as a bullpen guy out of spring training.. would be surprised if they go that route though...

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Wolfe brought back in some capacity as either a AAA pitcher or a coach of some sort.

Perhaps, instead of signing a veteran starter to a minor league contract...the Tigers might think of trading for a swingman for the bullpen. The D'Backs have an abundance of former starters who have, or will, be used out of the bullpen. I wonder if they'd part with Michigander Josh Collmenter? Maybe dangle Collins or Moya as bait?

Greene is listed as questionable for the start of the season. Not wanting to rush Fulmer into the majors, that possible could leave only Farmer and Ken Ryan as depth. After thinking about it, I'd like to see Detroit look into trading for a swingman that they could start the season with. I suggested Collmenter from AZ. Maybe Streiby from the Astros? I am sure there are a bunch that are, or will be, available. There might be some guy out there who is out of options the Tigers could consider adding to their pen.

I can guarantee that if Fulmer has a solid spring and someone gets hurt.. he will be the guy called up. There are only so many options on the 40 man. Everything I have read is saying Greene will be ready.

Top Tiger worries....

1. Aging, delicate bodies (Cabrera, VMart, Verlander, Sanchez, Iglesias)
2. Questionable rotation (depth, experience of Norris/Fulmer, health)
3. Bullpen (will it cease to be a laughing stock of baseball?)

Another year of trying to slug their way into contention. Detroit will rebound from last season (if healthy) but how far is a question. In a parity league (AL)....85 wins might get them in the post season.

Baseball Prospectus, while being down on Detroit's long term future, feels the addition of Upton and Maybin may give the team one more year at a WS shot before the door begins to close. Like most, they wonder how long Illitch will keep spending money if, yet again, his pocketbook fails to get him that WS title. They predict Cabrera (if healthy) should put up numbers similar to last year. They also see Verlander having a solid season. (No mention of Zimmerman). The Cabrera and Verlander up-tick is matched on Fangraph projections. However, Fangraph also sees a regression from both Iglesias and Kinsler.
