my grades on Avila's moves so far

  • frod trade - B+ (older guy that was traded for a mid tier player from a position of depth)
  • Maybin trade - B (odd fit but didn't give up much)
  • zimmerman signing - A ( price he got him at was fair and obvious need)
  • pelfrey signing - D+ (makes no sense to give a low tier pitcher a 16 mil contract a few weeks into free agent market)
  • aviles signing - D ( guy does nothing average.. mostly everything below at this point. )
  • Saltalamacchia signing - B+ ( good signing on the cheap)
  • Upton Signing - A ( good fit and solid contract deal )
  • Justin Wilson trade - A ( gave up mid tier prospects that were from positions of depth)
  • Mike Lowe signing - C+ ( decent player but nothing special was given a deal above what he should have)

I can't argue too much with those grades. Maybe an A- for Upton. Lowe fills a need and would get a 'B' from me if they had signed him for a bit less. I agree, he was signed above market value for what he brings.

I doubt Lowe is going to be horrible.. I hope at least.. but the Tigers could have had Benoit back by trading a few mid tier prospects and only paid a tad bit more this year and not have to worry about the second year.

The Angels have announced a trade to acquire corner infielder Jefry Marte from the Tigers in exchange for second baseman Kody Eaves. Marte had been designated for assignment to clear roster space for the signing of Justin Upton.

the 22-year-old Eaves reached the High-A level last year, putting up a .248/.308/.387 slash in his 575 plate appearances. He also stole 21 bases on the year. Eaves was a 16th round pick in the 2012 draft.

Marte looked like a decent depth piece to have around with legit power... not sure who Kody Eaves is.. but he seems to have some promise.

Both are depth pieces. With Kinsler only signed through 2017 (plus a 2018 option), I don't hate the move, but Eaves so far looks marginal, at best.

Tigers have depth in the minors at middle infield. Machado is most likely pegged for 2nd when kinsler is gone. They also have a kid that tore up the winter league in harold castro... he was at AA last year and was solid. Talk has also surrounded moving Jacoby Jones to 2nd as well.

Tigers made the Marte move to free up a spot on the 40 man for Upton... They basically traded him for a slightly lesser piece that they didn't have to add to their 40 man this year.

I don't think they will bring Ryan up to the 25 man. My best guess would be VerHagen and either Rondon or Farmer. Depends on where fat boy's head is at. Wouldn't surprise me if they put Rondon in AAA as punishment for a few weeks and take someone like Ferrell or Montreal Robertson if they have lights out springs too.

Wouldn't it be great if A Sanchez had a another great year and the Tigers could trade him for a decent young prospect and move forward with Fulmer in the rotation after this season?

ANY scenario where I can use the words "Anibal Sanchez" and "great year" in the same breath this season works for me.

He can bat left handed and play the infield, so he's got that going for him. Lol

I honestly did like Marte. Hope he gets a chance with the Angels. I would've had no problem with him at the end of the bench.

It's easy.

Just start the sentence with " I remember when,"..... Lol

If Sanchez has even a good year, Aviles won't matter.

This is very true... If the Tigers are leading the division or close to a wild card... they will eat the cost of Aviles deal and find an upgrade almost guaranteed.... and Sanchez having a solid season will be a reason for that.

Yes, the team will hit well enough, so they will go as far as the pitching will take them. Really scared for the health of guys like Verlander, Sanchez and F-Rod.

Aviles only matters if Ausmus uses him liberally in the outfield and he botches some crucial plays.

I am not as worried about Verlander as I am about Sanchez... Hopefully he can pull it together for one more year. If not.. hopefully Fulmer is the real deal. The one thing the Tigers have going for them is the fact they only have a few guys older than 30 on their team. Most of the team is young and still have room to have break out years. Heck.. I don't even think we have seen the best from JD Martinez yet.

If the Tigers can have a league average bullpen and league average rotation... they are going to be one of the top teams.. because even last year with the shit last few months.. the Tigers were a top 3 offensive team by most metrics...

Replacing Cespedes with Upton should help OBP with both having the same amount of power... and guys like Castellanos and McCann hopefully continuing to get better at the plate.. the team should be one of the top offensive teams again. And if they are in it around the trade deadline.. I assume they will add pitching where needed.

I am praying for Moya to hit a ton of HR in AAA and look like a monster down there so he can be the key to a deal.. or have a few of the mid tier starting pitching prospects tear it up in AA or AAA.

Fulmer might end up coming up late in the season and being an important addition to the pen.

Yep, me too.

I've always loved Franky, but the road that brought him to us was a long one. Hopefully he's got more in the tank than Nathan did.

I wouldn't mind Aviles, if we didn't have Romine.

Can't say as I had a veteran target in mind who could play most anywhere in a pinch that can also bat left handed.

Well,.... other than.... You know.....

Franky scares me too... but I think the bullpen has much more depth than last year.. and its much easier to trade for a back of the rotation piece in season than most positions on the roster.

I would have been perfectly happy if they gave don kelly a 2 mil 1 year deal. He can actually play defense at the spots the teams intend on using aviles at.

Nobody better in recent memory when it comes to providing "peace of mind".

Donnie Boy can work a count too.
