Because the playoff isn't about football, it's about money. Is this really in question?

Well shit, when do I get my check?

It's almost as if I was wondering why other people cared(outside everyone who thinks X numbers is proof of something).

Its proof that many people watch Bama win. Personally I dont care if its 10 or 10 million as long as the Buckeyes win.

And to the ratings people... if you didn't watch, you missed out. Sucks you were watching Golden State beat the Heat, or the Bachelor.

Also, it's kind of stupid to have a gamecast on like 6 different channels. Because football savvy people checked in on those channels with football breakdowns rather than listen to Fowler and Herbstreit. I didn't because I was at Outback. But forreal, if you want ratings, base the game to one channel, not like 6. Or however many it was.

Last year represented 2 different regions and was the inaugural playoff. This year represented one region and it was the 2nd year of the playoff. Who really expected the ratings to go up, based on that?

Yeah. That's what I think is all the channels fucked up the ratings. I was ESPN2 most of the time listening to the coaches to see how much insight they could really give. I enjoyed how they broke down every play and showed what gaps and blocks were being missed, blown coverages, etc.

There's only a few states outside of the SEC region that I would think puts more emphasis on football than any other sports. Oklahoma, Nebraska, West Virginia, Virginia, Washington, Oregon, and the Dakotas. Every other state I can think of either has hockey, basketball, or pro sports not named the NFL as the major sport in the state. California is big, sure. But its only big football bases historically are in Los Angeles and Oakland. MLB and NBA teams are more prevelant in California, as well as FIFA and NHL.

the overnight ratings for Duke vs Wisconsin were 17.1
the overnight ratings for the CFP Championship were 15.8

Well, it was a title game rematch. And its one of the last if not the last big OOC games of the regular season.

And FWIW... I had no idea Duke-Wisconsin were even playing :pound:

Because ratings are important to the popularity of the sport?

Not really. The Championship game is going to be broadcast no matter what. And the playoff system itself would still go on even without it being televised.

At worse they would move it out of prime time.

I'd add Ohio to the list. I mean...Canton. That's all that needs to be said on that one. Ohio is arguable the most important state when it comes to football. Why do you think Ohio State has such arrogant fans who have superiority complexes? Without Ohio, who knows where football popularity would be right now? And Texas? Texas is home to the biggest HS football around. Friday Night Lights anyone? I think you're selling football short here.

Texas is in the SEC region... Texas A&M.

Ohio is pretty big on football, but they also have the NBA, college basketball, hockey, and MLB. Ohio State I would guess makes up 80-90% of the total fanbase in college football between all the MAC schools and Cincinnati. Past Ohio State, not many people care for college football in Ohio. States like Oregon and Washington, who have two primary state colleges, are more college sports based than others. Ohio State doesn't even have an in state rival. Not in recruiting, and not in games. Sure, Canton has the NFL Hall of Fame. But Atlanta has the college football Hall of Fame.
