It's apparently surprising to our front office brain trust, but when your former Pro Bowl LT gets into his mid 30s, it's pretty predictable that before long his performance will take a drop.

Yup...

but what could/would you have done to fix it?

We had massive holes in secondary, which needed to be fixed. LB's looked shaky. O-line was a problem. When Maclin walked, WR became an issue. Not sure about last year, but general agreement among the pundits is that in the draft, basically all linemen they graded in those rounds were gone - picked right in front of them. We might have reached for an O-lineman, but we all know how that worked out the last time it happened (Danny Watkins).

In free agency there was nothing, unless you wanted to overspend even more on an O-lineman than we did on Maxwell. At the same time, the O-linemen that were there looked servicable, based on last season.

The sole argument you can make where they were completely wrong would be Mathis. Thing is, Mathis (or rather Rosenhaus) played himself out of a job. It became a game of chicken, that ended up with both teams being the loser.

I do not remember exactly how the 2014 draft went as far as O-line goes.

What I would have done is maybe not sign two running backs to expensive contracts and instead use some of the money on a guy like Orlando Franklin, who signed with the Chargers.

Right now, our last two first rounders, Marcus Smith and Nelson Agholor, are contributing close to nothing. Smith is not even active on game day.

With Marcus Smith you have a point - so far - with Agholor you have not. Last year was the exception for WR's, not the rule, as well as Agholor having faced generally the top CB on the other side, which has also negatively impacted his numbers.

Also, apparently O-line rookies tend to be not too good, these days. Simply because of the crapfest college line-play has turned into. Thing is, all people currently on the O-line played last year, and they are doing (much) worse than they did last year.

I think Agholor will be real good. Most rookie WRs take awhile to get used to tighter coverage and the speed of the game v.s college. He was also rated as a late 1st round pick, so he wasn't a reach. Smith wasn't rated high at all. Maybe a late 2nd/3rd round pick. O-linemen can sometimes be real good as rookies, ala Lane Johnson, but he was the only one of the top 4 OTs in 2013 who have panned out good so far.

Marcus is just coming on. He's really been showing a lot and looked really good in training camp.

Should be seeing the top quality prospect that he is/was really soon.

What is Chip putting in those smoothies, Xanax? Ps Cary Williams looks good in Seattle. He is basically the same player as Maxwell for way less money

Cary Williams is playing in a zone defense, which is what he played in Baltimore. He was not a fit for Davis' defense here.

He looked to be playing press man to me. He just has real players around him, linebackers covering underneath and safeties providing help over the top, and it covers up some of his deficiencies. He looks just as good as Maxwell over there.

If Agholar catches and didn't commit the penalty we still win. If the kicker makes it we win. If Garcon doesn't make both incredible catches we win. We're close.

Speaking of poor drafting, how does that selection of Josh Huff over Donte Moncrief look right about now?

I really like Huff, but he has done very little. So far, he's a bust. Sorry, but I hope he turns it on. Getting late.

Cowboys will lose, as well as the Skins. the Gianst should beat the Niners.

It will not be easy to beat the Saints if they can't pass rush. Brees will pick us apart. Hope we can, but we need our o-line and pass rush to improve a lot.
Rob Ryan loves to blitz. Bradford better learn quickly getting rid of the ball.

I liked my plan far better than Chips
