well yesterday i wrote that our young right side held their own vs watt and co . now we have some proof of such and sherf did very well

i have little doubt that sherf will be a great pick for us and watt says he will "be fine "

like moses progress so far

need to see both players do it in games

Washington Redskins: Brandon Scherffs Possible Position Change Points To A New Way Of Business proplayerinsiders.com Readability

Excerpt

Some may not like the notion of Scherff playing guard when he was drafted with the fifth overall pick. I totally get it. That’s a similar argument I made Pre-Draft. I don’t believe in taking guards top-ten, unless they’re potential All-Pro’s. But with many pass rushers now in the NFL, linemen and linebackers alike, rush from the interior. Your interior in today’s NFL is extremely important. Not only do the J.J. Watt’s of the world rush from the inside a lot, so do the stand-up guys like Justin Houston. So when you’re able to solidify a guard spot with a nasty, grimy player — you take pride in doing just that.

Sure it’s easier to find guards than tackles. But there’s nothing harder than finding an All-Pro at any position. The Washington Redskins could have that in Scherff. Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure, it’s become very clear that winning on-the-field is slowly emerging as the most important trait for Washington.

hey watt will win his share he is the best defender in the NFL and to have our 2 young guys stick with him a bit is a good thing

i dont get this sherf bashing / moses thing . its a great thing to get 2 young high draft picks on the field taking care of business

we need t worry about winning games and not where draft picks were picked , if sherf becomes an all pro OG or close to it we still made out and if moses becomes a solid JJ type OG we make out yet again

  • John Keim, ESPN Staff Writer
RICHMOND, Va. -- Highlights and observations from the Washington Redskins' practice vs. the Houston Texans Friday:

  • Saw a little difference in rookie lineman Brandon Scherff during one-on-one drills; saw him let the rusher get into his chest once, but for the most part he was quicker with his hands. Because he plays with a strong base, that's all it took for him to win. Scherff must work on his timing with his hands -- when you move inside, it's even more pronounced. He can be more patient at tackle; at guard you must get the hands up right away.

  • In one drill vs. Houston's defensive line, Scherff got end J.J. Watt off a double team and knocked him off balance. But Watt used a strop rip move to beat Scherff in 11-on-11 work.

  • Watt is big and strong, but good lord he finishes off the all-around package by being so quick, too. It makes him effective on stunts and loops because he can get there quickly and it makes him dangerous on backside runs. You always have to account for him; at times the past two days I've even seen receiverAndre Roberts try to block him backside, just to slow him down a little.

  • Rookie running back Matt Jones likes to lower his shoulder and try to drive through defenders. But what coach Jay Gruden wanted to see him do is finish more runs downfield. He did that Friday when he ran around left end and ran over a Texans defensive back along the sidelines, right where his teammates were standing. They went crazy, of course. Those kind of runs energize an entire team. Do not go crazy and extrapolate from this; Alfred Morris is a much more polished runner. But Jones likes the contact and earlier in the practice he also lowered his shoulder and rammed into linebacker John Simon on a 5-yard carry.

  • Need to see more of the backs in pass protection drills, but I did see Jones do a nice job on one pickup. He started to the right of quarterback Colt McCoy, crossed him and picked up a defensive back blitzing between the tackle and guard.

Kirk Cousins, had their moments. McCoy, like Robert Griffin III, holds the ball a little longer at times. But on one play-action in which both deep men were covered he quickly dumped it off; problem was, running back Silas Reddstill got popped. McCoy later hit receiver Tony Jones on an out; a nice job leading him on the throw. Cousins was patient on one throw in particular, letting a deep ball with Reggie Bell develop. The second he saw it wasn't happening, he found tight end Devin Mehina underneath.
  • A couple plays later, Cousins was patient again on an out to rookie receiverEvan Spencer. But Spencer dropped the ball -- he's had too many drops in camp. Spencer did come back with a catch later in the practice. On that play, McCoy showed good anticipation on the deep out. McCoy did miss a little on a deep pass down the right side to tight end Jordan Reed one play later.

  • McCoy ended his day with a touchdown pass. He was forced to run to the right, but his ability to extend a play mattered. So, too, did Spencer's ability to adjust. Spencer was running an out in the front part of the end zone, but when McCoy ran to his right, Spencer quickly shifted back to the middle and McCoy whipped the ball on the run across his body for a score. It was slightly back to the middle and there was no one else around the ball.

  • One thing second-year wideout Ryan Grant does is provide trust for the quarterbacks. They know when he'll break and that he'll come back for the ball.

  • Undrafted rookie Trey Williams, a guy the organization thinks has a shot at a roster spot, is learning how to run more decisively. It was an issue a couple times Friday, where he's caught between hitting the hole and wanting to bounce.

  • Second-year lineman Spencer Long took one snap at center in full-team work and another one in an earlier drill. The Redskins really are trying to see how players perform at various spots.

  • Liked how the Redskins' front did not get moved off the ball all that often. Saw nose tackle Terrance Knighton get off a double team on one run to the right. Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan had a good day as well. He and Trent Murphy both got to the quarterback on one rush; Murphy did so on a play in which he started from a stand-up position across from the right side of Houston's line. The Redskins could do more with their four-man rush -- and are helped by the fact that Houston lacks a good quarterback.

  • The Redskins' first three corners Friday: Justin Rogers, Deshazor Everett andTajh Hasson. Yes, the Redskins are that banged up at corner.

  • Safety Dashon Goldson forced an incompletion with a hit inside the 5-yard line on a pass over the middle.

  • ryan grant just keeps making plays , now we need to see it in games

Rather, in a drill where the offense had it first-and-goal from the 10, the Redskins gained five yards on a first-down Alfred Morris run. That success enabled Washington to still keep Houston guessing as to what was coming next -- and that left receiver Pierre Garcon one-on-one with cornerback Kareem Jackson. Griffin took advantage with a pretty fade for a touchdown.

Brandon Scherff into the quarterback).

During the first 11-on-11 session, Griffin did connect with tight end Jordan Reedon a deep out and with receiver Ryan Grant on a long ball down the left side. Griffin threw it off his third step for what looked like a 25- to 30-yard gain (I was at the other field, so the distance was a little spotty).

In seven-on-seven work, Griffin missed on one out-and-up by Garcon; right decision, but did not get the ball out far enough.

Overall, it was a better day than Thursday -- and the Redskins would like nothing more than to have him post consecutive good days as the teams finish their work together Saturday.

well lets see if he can put a good day in tomorrow

Yep.

Back to the OL Morgan Moses has now become the most important player on that line. Scherff was drafted to fill the biggest hole on that line. With his move to guard, where we already had a player read to take over in Long, it is critical that Moses continues his strong play so we can finally fill that spot with young talent. If he fails, well, the OL will again be a problem despite a huge upgrade at RG.

Crowder may have been my favorite draft pick after I started reading the reviews on him. Now it's clear that he has made the biggest impact of all the rookies so far. I see him as a huge part of this team going forward. They'll probably have to keep Roberts due to his contract but he should not be doing too many home improvements, he won't be here long enough to enjoy them.

No chance that maybe Callahan decided LONG wasnt ready to start and decided it served the team best to shift the rookie inside for now and give Moses who SHOULD have already been ahead of most rookies the RT spot.

Just has to be that Scherff was a mistake right??

And before you say well then why isnt Moses at RG then, his KNOW weakness is his height and a lack of ability to get low enough to play guard consistently.

Put the best five on the field regardless of position

Look dude this isn't coming from me. It was widely reported here that Scherff struggled at RT, Kerrigan owned him on one on one drills. The concerns we all had about his lack of foot quickness are apparent, at least for now. He has struggle with the edge rush.

The move was by all reports a move based on Scherff's play at RT and his ability to play RG. It had nothing to do with Long's play, there is not one single report of that being the issue. Moses is a tackle, he was never considered a guard. Scherff was projected as a guard who they were going to try at RT. It didn't work, again for now anyway. So the natural move, if you want to put the best 5 on the field as you say, is to go with this group in these spots.

I have no problem with this move, again I think Scherff will be an awesome guard. The argument we had all spring was can Scherff fill the biggest need on this team, RT, or will he be converted to guard. And again my position was he won't be quick enough to play tackle, thuse not filling that critical need, and 5 is too high to take a guard especially when that guard is not even a guard, he is a converted tackle.

taking a guard at a certain point is a myth and will always be one you take the best player and we did
