I don't have any issues with the list but Andy Reid is a fucking boss in that picture.

Whoever wrote this article just seems all over the place for reasoning. Some of them are based off just recent success where others are based on what they did 5 years ago like Coughlin. I would rank Coughlin lower as yes he has the two Super Bowls but lately his teams have just been terrible. He seems to be either win the Super Bowl or team just sucks.

Right now my top-5 would go..

1) Bill Bilichick--Was there any doubt?
2) Mike McCarthy--2nd highest winning percentage, Super Bowl champion, and has shown even when Rodgers goes down with injury that he can get his team to rise to the occasion.
3) John Harbaugh--3rd highest winning percentage among active coaches, Super Bowl champion, and has yet to have a losing season in 7 seasons.
4) Peter Carroll--Great winning percentage, Super Bowl Champion, and looks to once again put together a strong team for this upcoming season.
5) Mike Tomlin--Super Bowl Champ, 4th highest winning percentage, with 5 of his 8 seasons having double digit wins.

Also Coughlin deserves to be that high. The team has been crippled with injuries and they have whiffed on a lot of drafts of late and yet they are in almost every game. Even when they lose they make it interesting and play tough. Given equal lineups give me Coughlin over pretty much everyone on the list minus the guys ahead of him. I think they got him right.

Plenty of teams have suffered lots of injuries and overcame them. The Broncos just two years ago only had 3 starters on defense make it to the Super Bowl that started week 1. So I'm not big on the whole injury excuse of why a team has been stinking it up. Also the draft the head coach is still a part of that. So if they are whiffing some of that does fall on Coughlin.

The Giants have made the playoffs twice in the last 8 years.

You glossed over the fact they had a HOF QB as well as the best receiving corps in the league on the other side of the ball. And I don't really know how much of a say Coughlin actually has in the draft, that's pretty much all Jerry Reese. I hate the Giants but Coughlin is a stud.

Well I guess just agree to disagree then. I'm more into the whole consistency side of things of a coach having their team competitive year in year out to actually make the playoffs.

Ranking the NFL coaches 1-32: No easy choices, except at No. 1 - CBSSports.com

Anyone have any issues with this? I think Marvin Lewis is too low. I also think Del Rio is too low.
1. Bill Belichick, New England Patriots -- His four Super Bowl rings end any debate about who's the best now -- and might be the best ever. In 20 seasons, including five with Cleveland, Belichick is 211-109-0 for a .659 winning percentage, the best of any active coach. His winning percentage in 15 seasons with the Patriots is an amazing .729 with 12 consecutive seasons of 10 or more victories. The Spygate stuff hurts in some eyes, but there is no debating he's the top guy now.

yup

you could argue, but you'd need a tethered helmet and a tasty window.

Yep...good top 5.

Coughlin is a very good coach, but fortunate he works for a very patient ownership...Tomlin was probably the only DEF HC on the list that didn't hire the DC (different scheme from his own)...on game day it made him look a little detached, several bad losses vs non-playoff teams really is his biggest drawback...thru this rebuild, the team seems to respond to him in trying times. It will be interesting to see how far he can take the rebuild under Ben's last contract. If they make it back to another SB...yeah, solid top 5...no...probably 8 to 10 range.

Lovie Smith is way too low. Tampa will start to look better soon. He always had those Bears teams playing well above their talent level.

Rex Ryan is WAY too high. He'll be good with Buffalo initially because they have so much talent already on hand especially on defense. But he doesn't develop talent and that is what an NFL coach has to do more than anything. I would rather have virtually any other coach in the league coaching my team.

And yes Coughlin is too high IMO. Him and Eli clearly made a deal with the devil to win 2 rings with what are 2 of the poorest teams in history to ever win a SB.

Honestly a lot of this is hard to do because it is hard to rate a coach that has only been coaching for a year or two. And about half the league has only been coaching for a year or two.

I agree with this. Other than Del Rio, I think the bottom 12-15 are largely interchangeable.

Just think where we would have all rated Belichick after 4 years in Cleveland....or Pete Caroll after his Jet's stint.

Obviously things worked out just fine for the Ravens. But they fired a guy that is inarguably the best head coach of this generation and a top 10 guy in history. Pretty big whoops moment. I still wonder how different that '00 defense would have looked if he was running it instead of the more conservative Lewis.
