Unless Chip is reporting to Howie (i.e. giving Howie the power to fire Chip in the future), Howie got neutered here. And while I think it's a good thing, I think it's a fair question to ask why give Chip the keys to the kingdom? I don't think he's demonstrated anything on the personnel side to warrant this.

Our last coach was a great coach absolutely undone by the GM version of himself. We've been down this road before and I'm surprised Lurie went back to the well again so soon.

My take on this is Lurie was afraid Chip was going to bolt and he capitulated to Kelly's powerplay.

IMO, it's a bad move. Kelly's system is unconventional and in turn his roster will be too. If he decides to leave next year or the year after this team will be in tatters. In much worse shape than Andy left it. He better stay to complete the job. I predict next year Kelly will threaten to leave if Howie isn't axed and we will have to play this charade again. Chip is a drama queen.

Because he is the head coach. A coach should be the person making he decisions on his players and staff.

Our last coach was a great coach absolutely undone by the GM version of himself. We've been down this road before and I'm surprised Lurie went back to the well again so soon.

And that falls on Andy Reid and his inability to build a championship team. Reid was the best coach the Eagles have had. Unfortunately he still came up short in the end.

My take on this is Lurie was afraid Chip was going to bolt and he capitulated to Kelly's powerplay.

I disagree. I Think this offseason the people making the decisions ignored the wants of Kelly and put on the field one of the worst defenses the Eagles have ever had.

Kelly needs to be given the chance to put his team on the field. It is not like he is running the team he making the decision on the players he wants.

The Eagles have Kelly under contract for three years. He either coaches for the Eagles or he goes to college. He does not coach anywhere else in the NFL without the Eagles permission.

There is no doubt in my mind this is a reaction to a Kelly ultimatum. After Gamble got fired Kelly went to Lurie and said either he gets full roster control or he's out. Lurie had no choice but to give it to him. An announcement like tbis doesnt come at 630 ON A Friday afternoon.

Can we get off the fear of Chip leaving? He wants to be a SB winning coach. Now, if after several years he can't get it done, then he leave, but let's give it a break, and stop the paranoia.

I have zero problem with Chip having more power over the players we go after. I remember Chip attending more offseason draft related events and workouts last year than most scouts go to. He knows exactly what his team needs as nobody knows team weaknesses more than the coach.

Amen. We do not know who made the decision to draft Marcus Smith. I believe that it was Howie because the 8 players they targeted were gone, and they traded back with Cleveland, and panicked when they needed a OLB, and took smith since he was the next highest OLB on their board. Whatever happened to taking the BPA? This year, Chip had better pick the BPA for his system, and even trade up for him. Do whatever it takes to get his players.

If this doesnt work then its time to ride Lurie out of town. I have been in management for years and its a very bad pressident to give in to threats and ultimatiams. No matter how great the employee is. No doubt Chip went whining to mommy after his big brother took away his binky in Gamble. I believe this is all going to blow up in our faces and ultimately mean several more years without a Super Bowl. The proper response to Chip would have been to call his bluff. Chip was not going anywhere without Lurie letting him out of is contract. College or otherwise. Lurie is going down the same road with Chip as he did with Reid and while Reid had some success the ultimate game was never won. So in the end we had some good fun with Reid but he failed.

Why in one of the best sports town in America do we continually have to have disjointed front offices running our teams. Every one of our 4 sports teams right now have issues at the top.

Given the drafting of that de from Oregon who never saw the field and the contributions of Huff, Watkins, et al. The notion that Chip is a good evaluator of talent seems to be stretching it.
It's those guys at the bottom of the draft and the fa pile that can have the big impact. We got zero from that last year.

The fact is, if Chip got out of his contract, he would have at least 5 teams that would snatch him up. How many coaches can you think of that have turned around a losing team in the doldrums as quickly as Chip has? From 4-12, to consecutive 10-6? If you recall, before this season, most of us said that the Eagles would have a tougher time to repeat, and were looking at a 9-7 or 10-6 record.

Now, Chip isn't going to spend more time as GM than coaching, he's going to hire an experienced personnel guy who will be the GM, and get Chip the players he needs to win a SB. I trust Chip. Bottom line. Unlike Reid, he adjusts. When he makes mistakes, he corrects them. Also, when he gets his players, he will win. Period.

A rumor has it that Terry Bradway, former Jets personnel guy, may be Chip's pick to be the GM. His son is already a scout with the Birds.

This was no crybaby ultimatum. Something big happened with Gamble and Lurie fired him. Someone had to take over his responsibilities and this is what they came up with. Chip probably begged for a CB last year and Gamble/Howie won out.

I wouldn't read too much into this. We'll win 12-14 games and a Superbowl in the next 3 or 4 or Chip will be gone. This is Laurie saying OK Chip I believe in you now go get it done. Don't think for a minute Howie isn't sitting back with a big scorecard. Also factor in Howie may have been looking for a bigtime GM job and they didn't like that.

Pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I'm guessing that a lot of went wrong with this team, Chip may have wanted to address or go a different route during the off season and ended up proven right. That being said Chip does need to get over drafting Oregon guys just because he's familiar with them ...

Rey I agree with you and Wiz.....but I'd take Oregon guys, there is a reason they are so damn good! They have some Studs! Chip needs to start selecting the GOOD Oregon guys earlier in the draft.

If this was a front office restructuring they would have done it all at the same time. The fact they waited two days after the gamble firing and five days after Lurie spoke glowingly about Howie as a Gm this stinks of a reactionary move by Lurie and also of an owner who has no pulse over what is happening in his organization. I hope I am wrong but this is what it appears to be.

Lurie probably wanted Howie to stay in a business side capacity so those comments are to be expected. Don't for a minute think a coach is going to dictate what a billionaire is going to do. Lurie probably has 5 other billionaires he confides in before you see anything reactionary.

AND, IF Chip leaves any time soon, Lurie goes back to Howie, and lets him pick the next coach.

Breaking news: ED MARYNOWITZ, Ass't Personnel Director, is the front runner to be Chip's personnel chief. He worked for the Dolphins prior to coming to the Eagles.

He also has a beautiful wife, so Wings would be thrilled! :)
