Is this the thread where every one predicts how long he's there until the NFL team he wants to coach at becomes available?

I don't get it. Why leave the NFL for the headaches of college ball? Makes no since to me.

Apparently Michigan will be paying Harbaugh big $$$ (supposedly even more than the two highest paid NFL coaches, Sean Payton & Pete Carroll)

Plus, Harbaugh is a control freak, and a college head coach has almost total control over the football program....there is no GM making personnel decisions like in the NFL....a college coach essentially doubles as the GM. So, Harbaugh will not have to deal with the headaches of the front office people on an NFL franchise. A typical college AD generally steps aside and lets all his coaches (in all the various sports) run their programs the way they see fit.

Plus, Harbaugh will not have to deal with the headaches associated with trying to handle the spoiled prima donna attitudes of NFL stars.

Several weeks ago when writer John U Bacon talked to Harbaugh, Bacon told Jim that if he remains in the NFL, he would be considered a great coach....but if he went to Michigan, he would be considered a Savior. And Jim has a very big ego, so being considered a Savior fits him like a glove.

He should turn things around at Michigan pretty quickly. I've read that several possible recruits will be interested in Michigan once Harbaugh is named coach.

Yup.....in a few years when an NFL opening occurs where the owner is willing to give Jim Harbaugh GM responsibilities & control, in addition to being head coach....plus a massive $$$ contract, with a franchise with great facilities & support........Jim will bolt for such an opportunity.

This will be a great get for Michigan. I do agree it may be short lived if another NFL opportunity comes about with the "control" he is looking for. Michigan fans should be excited, but very interested in the OC & DC that he hires. Best way to cover is to have a like minded option to step in in a few years.

I looked at when he coached Stanford .. not very impressive a coach there. . What makes you all think his NFL coaching will translate to college? We have seen this before. . And what if it takes years and years is Michigan willing to wait and pay him for that?

:wtf2: Harbaugh completely turned around a terrible program at Stanford . Then he proceeded to take a squad that did diddly squat under the previous coach at San Fran and all he did was win again. Not sure what you're looking at.

Twitter is saying that Harbaugh will be making at least $9m per year.

Stanford's win/loss may not look that great under Harbaugh, but everything that they have done since he left is thanks to him. He put the program in place for them to have success.

That could include his $5 mil buyout. I haven't seen the details of his separation from the Niners.

From 1-11 to 12-1 in four years including Stanford's first 12 win season and an Orange Bowl Trophy doesn't look good? Geesh.

From what I saw on tv, no buyout, no severance. Each walks away free and clear, no penalties on either side.

Harbaugh may return to the NFL. All level headed Michigan fans realize this, but I'd give him 6 years at his alma mater to ensure the program is back on track. At that point we'll take John Harbaugh for a few years, or until another legacy comes along. :D

That's all I've seen thus far as well.

Well, it sounds like York and Harbaugh really did have a heart to heart, shook hands, and that was that. Still, more may come out later...

Ahhh yes, the classic flip from, "he's never coming back to college" to "well, he'll leave soon anyway".

Personally, from what Harbaugh has actually been recording saying, it seems like he wouldn't take the Michigan job unless he expected it to be a longer term stop. I doubt his family would want to up and move again in 4 years; especially if he starts doing well here.

You can't replicate the connection some people have with their alma mater; especially the one Harbaugh has for Bo. The NFL also couldn't replicate the intense pleading he got from the Michigan fanbase and former players. There are some things college football has that the NFL doesn't, as John Bacon says -- It's not a sport, it's a religion.
