:wtf2: Harbaugh completely turned around a terrible program at Stanford . Then he proceeded to take a squad that did diddly squat under the previous coach at San Fran and all he did was win again. Not sure what you're looking at.

I don't really call that a complete turn around but more of a gradual rise. . Then he left for the NFL. .. and i actually only thought he was there for 3 years not 4..

I heard he hopped on his jet, flew across the bay to Oakland for a sit-down.

Harbaugh inherited a 1-11 team and in four years finished with a 12-1 record and won the Orange bowl against a #12 ranked Virginia Tech team. His teams improved every year and when he left the program was left in great shape. He did all this all the while Oregon was building a powerhouse and also while USC traditionally recruited as well as any college. Being a Notre Dame fan I watched his career from start to finish. I watched him play at Michigan, I watched him play with the Chicago Bears and followed his career. He took the same squad Mike Singletary couldn't do shit with and took it to the NFC championship two years in a row. In actuality his 49ers team should have won the last Super Bowl they were in, on that day Joe Flacco made some of the most incredibly lucky plays you could get. Harbaugh has nothing to prove to anyone who follows football.

Well, you've got to take a closer look at what he did at UCSD, Stanford and San Francisco. Simply put, he took all 3 as far as they were going to go while all 3 were garbage prior to his arrival (the 9ers had talent but were a perennial top 10 draft position team).

I wonder if playing Urban every year had something to do with his decision? The next Bo & Woody? He seems like the kind of guy who would love that challenge.

Apparently Michigan will be paying Harbaugh big $$$ (supposedly even more than the two highest paid NFL coaches, Sean Payton & Pete Carroll)

Plus, Harbaugh is a control freak, and a college head coach has almost total control over the football program....there is no GM making personnel decisions like in the NFL....a college coach essentially doubles as the GM. So, Harbaugh will not have to deal with the headaches of the front office people on an NFL franchise. A typical college AD generally steps aside and lets all his coaches (in all the various sports) run their programs the way they see fit.

Plus, Harbaugh will not have to deal with the headaches associated with trying to handle the spoiled prima donna attitudes of NFL stars.

Several weeks ago when writer John U Bacon talked to Harbaugh, Bacon told Jim that if he remains in the NFL, he would be considered a great coach....but if he went to Michigan, he would be considered a Savior. And Jim has a very big ego, so being considered a Savior fits him like a glove.

Exactly. Carroll went to Seattle because he was given essentially the same type of control over personnel that he had at USC (plus they dropped a whole lot of cash in his bank account). Harbaugh seems to have about a 4 year shelf life he starts to wear thin. That's perfect for college because the players are leaving after 3-4 years anyway. If the admin's stay away from him, things should work out well at Michigan.

Even if he leaves after 4-5 years, he will likely do just as he did at USD and Stanford and leave the program in great shape for whomever takes over.

Obviously, he needs to sign the contract and games need to be played to know how this will all work out, but it looks to be a great thing for Michigan.
