I think the root of the problem is that the Redskins think they are more talented than they really are. The entire defense is garbage. The GM needs to be fired, and the team totally rebuilt. Changing coaches--some, in fact, leaving the DC--and starting the same players is just insane.

They need one of these in DC:

Damn...that is one epically large broom... Not that that isn't a good suggestion for some of the areas on this team.

Yeah, and I still think he is better than Colt McCoy.

Maybe because for the first time in 40 years a win feels like a loss.

We may have won, but we very easily could have lost to arguably the worst team in the league, starting a 30 something journeyman QB. What's worse is we know whats coming this next week.

Cousins has a lot of talent, but he lacks the right mental makeup to last as a starter in the NFL. The skins should have traded him for a third rounder back when he had value. Now what is he worth?

Exactly. We have won 2 games and they were against Division I teams. And of course we barely beat a team with a disfunctional offense with a late FG at the gun as we watched the final chapter of the Kirk Cousins Story come to an end. At least for this year.

I couldn't agree more, in fact I have posted much of the same for several seasons now. Often at great risk of facing the ire of the so-called die-hards here. It is funny that as time goes on few hold on to what was once idealistic views of players like Orakpo, Hall, Clark, Meriweather and Kerrigan on the defensive side. Not to mention the entire Offensive line to the right of Williams, Moss, and Garcon on the offensive side. Now that reality has come all but one can be in dispute and that's Garcon now that he's become the second option as his career dictates.

Wow!! I actually expected something that was a bit more thought provoking than an article that had a subject without depth. Isn't it true that nearly every QB who's made a roster, especially higher drafted ones have the intangibles to make a great QB? Anyone reading this article has to wonder what Gruden sees that both Cleveland and San Fran. missed! Well, I for one am not fooled by this declaration. Recognizing an attempt at statesmanship for hopes' sake is exactly what the HC should be doing, the writer however, should retake reporter school 101.

We put the "fun" in dysfunctional.

At this point, Jay Gruden is Jim Zorn II to me. He's shown absolutely nothing at all that makes me think he's got a handle on this team, on why we're losing, or how to solve it.

Serious question: Can someone name ONE great decision he's made since he's arrived? Not one obvious decision, but one inspired, well thought out, choice that has lead to any sort of success?

Haslett? Nope. Special Teams? Nope. Boy Scout Sean McVay? WTF! Play calling? Not once. Roster moves? Nope. Team culture? Nothing changed there.

Gruden is :lame:

Uhh?

Maybe not great right now. But I do like his playcalling a lot. Keep in mind he had his starting QB for only 1 game. I don't have a problem with McVay although its too early to say if it was a good decision either. ANd benching Cousins was a good decision.

In reality he has had to coach a team without its #1 CB, NT, a banged up oline, #1 TE, and its starting QB. Plus this team just isn't that good. I don't have any problems with him right now.

Are you suggesting they continue to start Cousins? What are you crazy?

I think it is come to Jesus time in DC. There was a mirage season for one year under Shanahan-RGIII where it looked like this team was a contender. But take away that one magical year, look at the rest and you see a franchise in complete disarray, needing a total personnel and front office/coaching makeover.

The GM has to be fired first.

Then you need a new coach.

Then you need patience because it will take about 4 years to rebuild the team and cap situation.

Then you will need to pray RGIII isn't a broken toy.

That's what would be required to turn around the Redskins. These band-aid moves ain't working.

There was investment in the defense, with Orakpo and Kerrigan, but those guys are just not very good. They are way overrated by the team and should be replaced.

The entire defense in fact is hot garbage.

The offense has too many divas outside of Alfred Morris, who is a nice player, but let's face it, the new Mike Anderson. A late round rookie who flashed one year and plays hard but just lacks the talent to be an elite player.

Djack will always be Djack. He doesn't care if he wins. So long as he gets deep once in a while and scores he is happy. Doesn't give a darn about wins and losses, never has. But he does care about that $$$!

What Band Aid moves are you referring to? Signing DJax? He's been great, much to my surprise.
If they do as you say and fire the coach and GM after one year then then would be doing the very thing you have criticized them for doing over the year, knee jerk moves.

Well I do think they need to rebuild, that is what I have been saying all along. So you are right that canning a coach a year in would be a contrast to what I've said all along.

I am just not sure this is the right GM and coach though. But it may be the best Danny can get at this point given his reputation. I doubt the elite coaches are beating down his door for a shot to coach this team.

Basically you're making excuses why some things are not entirely Gruden's fault, and while I can accept that not everything is his fault - he inherited a hot mess and its still steaming - he has done absolutely nothing in my view that makes us better. I'm not asking to justify all his decisions, or provide excuses why they didn't work out. I'm asking if he has made any clearly good choices as HC, and I find that answer to be no.

IMO the single most important thing a HC can do is hire great assistants. Haslett is an unmitigated failure and he has been since day one. Keeping him was an epic mistake, done out of friendship, not objectivity. Raheem Morris has done nothing to make our young secondary into a solid unit, injuries not withstanding. I had hopes that Kotwica would improve the special teams, but they are still Special Olympics instead. McVay hasn't shown me squat. He hasn't helped Cousins eliminate simple unforced mistakes, Cousins has gotten WORSE over his 6 starts, not better. The play calling has consistently left our best unit - the running game - sitting idle while we sling the ball up 30 plus times a game. We haven't helped the OL at all by asking them to pass protect so much, nor our QBs. Every time Joe Gibbs teams got into a rut, they got out of it by pounding the rock 35 times a game. That was true in 1981, in the playoffs in 1982/83, in 1991, and in 2005 and 2007. Gruden hasn't learned that yet.

I'm just looking for something, anything, that gives me confidence in Gruden and I'm not finding it. Not hope, an actual sign that he's a good coach. Show me a sign...
