There was a strange sighting in the outfield at the Fall Instructional League in Arizona Wednesday.

It was Joey Gallo, all 6-5 of him.

While the Rangers still expect Gallo to remain a third baseman, the club is experimenting a bit with him in the outfield. The Rangers recently spoke with Gallo about the idea and began the experimentation in Wednesday’s game.

“Versatility is a plus,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “It gives both the club and the player options. Joey’s a good athlete and, while we don’t doubt he can play third, this is an easy way to give him additional paths to the big leagues, when the time comes that he’s ready and we have a need. As we sit today, I expect him to start 2015 at third base in the minor leagues, but Instructional League is the time to introduce new things.”

Man, Odor and Rua look like they need to be starting with the big club next year. Rua starting to flash some power. This team is just more relaxed and is playing better ball. Martin and Elvis look better too.

I was wondering when that was going to happen.

Rua, Odor, Chirinos, and Smokinski all should be on the team, whether starting or playing significant roles in reserve, next season. I also like the versatility and attitude Rosales brings. I'm probably forgetting someone here, but these are the internal candidates I see for next season:

IF- Fielder, Moreland, Odor, Andrus, Profar, Sardinas, Rosales, Beltre, Chirinos, Telis, Arencibia

OF- Choo, Martin, Rua, Smolinski, Robertson, Adducci, Choice

SP- Darvish, Holland, maybe Perez, Lewis, Tepesch, Martinez, Bonilla, Mikolas

RP- Feliz, Cotts, Ogando, Mendez, Scheppers, Ross, Patton, Tolleson, Klein

Fielder, Beltre, and Andrus are automatic starters. Odor and Profar battle for 2B. Chirinos has turned into a quality starting C.

Choo and Martin are likely automatic starters. I'd be fine with Rua and Smolinski battling for the other corner spot.

DH is likely Moreland, the Rua/Smolinski duo, or an outside signing like VMart.

**- In my ideal scenario they trade Elvis and his awful salary to free up room to sign Scherzer. A Darvish-Scherzer-Holland trio would be lethal. Let Profar, Odor, and Sardinas man the middle infield. Say adios to Rios and let Rua, Smolinski, and Adducci battle for his spot.

Rua's shown doubles power as well, nice to see some leaving the park too

Needs to work on the finer points, would like to see him at 1B next year with Fielder DHing

Odor's biggest issue is plate discipline, he needs to learn to work the count better

Telis and Chirinos should be the catchers next year

Choo in RF, Martin in CF and a battle royale between Smols/Choice/Rua if he's not going to be 1B

Daniel Robertson could be the 4th OF type

C- Cheerios/Telis
1B- Rua/Fielder
2B- Odor/Sardi
3B- Beltre/Sardi
SS- Andrus/Sardi
LF- Smols/Choice/Rua
CF- Martin/Robertson
RF-Choo/Smols/Choice/Rua
DH-Fielder/Beltre/Choo

With a case for Rosales over some of the above guys as well

The pitching staff is a mess and not even going to get into that outside of Feliz, Darvish and Holland due to free agency, injury, age, ineffectiveness, etc...

Would take Rosales at super utility over Sardi. Yeah I cannot believe I said that either.

getting into the rebuilding frame of mind, i think we should

1) consider trading Beltre during the off-season for a packet of prospects and bring up Gallo because i think Beltre will be gone by the trade deadline any way.

2) we should also consider trading Darvish now for a large packet of prospects.

3) sign Lewis and go with a starting staff of Holland, Lewis, Tepesch and 2 from those who started this season.

Trading Beltre would be foolish. He's the heart and soul of this team and he's just a flat out badass even at his age. If it were up to me I'd do whatever I could to have Beltre finish his career in a Rangers uniform. Also why are we anointing prspects thinking they're going to come in and replace what we have? I don't doubt Gallo is a stud but at the end of the day he's just that...a prospect.

So you want to trade our true ace for prospects? Surely you know what it was like decades prior of this organization never able to find that true ace and we have him on a friendly contract and you want to trade that away? Sorry no thanks. I'd like to have the conversation for a long term extension get started between JD and Yu's people.

I do think Lewis comes back on a decent team friendly deal but I think JD will go out and get another pitcher. So I think the staff will consist of Darvish, Holland, #3 TBD, Tepsch/Martinez, and Lewis. In the meantime they're going to fight through and wait for Perez to come back which will hopefully be sometime late next year but if not then I think you're still ok with that staff if JD can land a solid pitcher this off-season to fill that need.

I want Beltre to stay buti i also would like to see him have one more chance at winning a WS ring before he retires and if we're going to take 2 or 3 years to rebuild he won't have that chance here.

as far as Darvish is concerned, i think he will opt out after the 2016 season and i want the Rangers to get as much as they can back for him while they can. i also think that if our offense and defense are going to possibly be as bad as it appears than it will do nothing but hurt the return we'll get.
