Was the hit on Foles cheap?

That was a bullshit play. Both illegal and cheap.

I'm not liking all of the pussified qb protection rules that we have today. I don't like that we are over-protecting abs. However, this was not a qb issue. That was a cheap shot regardless of who the player was. Player was not involved in the play. Player was not looking. Play was over. = cheap.

Cheap and illegal. First, the ball carrier was down 5 yards away. 2nd, he hit him from the side when foles was just standi g there. Then, he grabs peters facemask like a sissy instead of trying to take him on face to face.

LOL....what a freakin crybaby.

Once the QB throws a pick he is now a defender and should be treated as any other defender. Foles was not blocked in the back. If he doesn't want to get blocked after an INT I suggest he go down to the ground.

Once he throws the pick, he becomes a defensive player.

If the quarterback is not allowed to be blocked because he is still a quarterback, then he should not be allowed to get into the play and attempt to make a tackle either.

Fair is fair....

oh wait.

We're talking about quarterback treatment. Scratch that. They will forever more receive special treatment in Roger Goofdell's NFL.

:agree:

Are we having reading comprehension problems? I thought I stated pretty clearly that, imo, it was a cheap shot regardless of him being a qb. You responded with a qb becomes a defender and should be treated as such.

??? :noidea:

They actually changed the rules 10 years ago to make this a more clear foul.

Some announcers and players are under the misinformed notion that you can hit a quarterback after an interception. You really cannot unless its absolutely necessary to the play.

NFL RULEBOOK
Rule 12, Section 2, Article 7

"It is a foul if a player initiates unnecessary contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture."
"A quarterback at any time after a change of possession is considered in a defenseless posture."

The only wiggle room comes into play with the word "unnecessary".
If the defender can say with a straight face that blowing up Nick Foles was "necessary" to the play, then he will not be punished.

^^^^THIS!

STOP SAYING IT WAS LEGAL WHEN IT WASNT!

It's been illegal for about a decade. Factually speaking that's not disputable.

Was it a cheap shot? I say yes. He intentionally charges Foles and launched his shoulder into him when he wasn't looking, away from the play. Hugh Douglas did this to the Bears QB about 14 years ago, Jim Miller, and knocked him out of a playoff game. That was dirty too, but at the time it was a legal play.

Foles has to be smarter than that, and keep his head on a swivel. I am sure he has learned that lesson now.

The good news is that it seemed to fire Foles up. He stayed in the game and threw a pretty TD pass to Maclin on the same drive that put the Eagles ahead for good. Gritty win.

It was legal and if Foles actually kept his head in the game, he should have been prepared. There was no whistle at the time, Foles thought it was a pick - otherwise he'd have been walkin' off the field. Every coach in football from Pop Warner on up says 'play until the whistle'.

The play was not over... not down by contact assuming (as everyone did) it was a pick. The whistle didn't blow prior to Foles getting hit.

For the record hate the Eagles, and hate Foles.

However that shot on Foles was a freaking joke. Against the rules or not it's a cowardly play.

Now if I'm the Eagles I'm glad it happened to be honest. Your team just showed the respect they have for it's QB, and if anything they gained more, and they will be closer from this experience.

That being said my friend who's an Eagles fan went to a Minnesota @ Philadelphia game with Minnesota plates. His car got egged and trashed in the parking lot, and the attendants there basically told him to go fuck himself. So F the Eagles and I hope they lose the rest of their games :).

Check out the debate after the 5:00 mark. The video used here is also very telling. Foles is very close to the action. If he doesn't want to get hit then stop moving in the direction of the damn play! What doesn't he get?

Typical - all these Eagles players & fans want to act like a bunch of tough guys when in reality they are weak. NP - we will work to get some flags for Foles so that he never gets touched again. Again - he needs to pay attention & stay way from the action or else accept the consequences.

The hit was legal officially

Meanwhile, NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent told The Washington Post that Baker won't be suspended or fined for his hit.

"Baker didn't do anything wrong with that hit," Vincent said. "When you look at the rule, he didn't do anything illegal. People can say it's a cheap shot and you can talk about whether it might fall under unsportsmanlike conduct. But when you know the rule and you look at the play, he didn't hit him in the head. He didn't hit him in the neck. We looked at it. I looked at it very closely. He's not going to be fined for that."

People complain that the league is too soft, too many flags, and that you can't touch a QB. Yet when it happens, fans go....

And I call BS - Breeland was already down. Hugh Douglas got fined and maybe suspended for a similar hit (and IIRC he was actually escorting a returner, not coming in from the blind side) in the playoffs for Chicago. Vincent is ignoring all the clauses related to the QB.

And if this had been Manning/Brees or any of the golden boys, the verdict would have been totally different (fine and possibly suspension). The only thing this does is covering the behinds of about the most incompetent officiating crew around - who lost control early over the game, refused to protect players (numerous late hits, many Washington DB's leading with helmets (prime example the hit on McCoy), blatant face masks), and could not properly spot incomplete passes/actual catches or down by contacts to safe their lives.

Yeah really. Of course some fans are much better at rule interpretation.

(Take me for example on Brady's fumble. Tuck that).
