Well from that angle the play was clearly over, for one. But yes, Foles needs to keep his head on a swivel if he is around the ball on an INT.

The rule doesn't make any distinction about which direction the QB is moving.
The QB is fully allowed to walk/run towards the action and still retains the protection of the rule.

Any UNECESSARY contact to a quarterback after a change of possession is a foul.

The only way that hit is legal is if the defender can argue it was NECESSARY contact.

You cannot make contact with the QB at all after an interception (not even a love tap nudge) unless the contact is absolutely necessary to complete the football play.

And clearly it was not necessary.

It was a foul, and it was correctly called by the referee as such.

I will agree that it was correctly called.

I think the wording of the rule is ridiculous. QB's shouldn't get to be invincible defenders on possession change. They should either play with the same level of protection as other players, or get out of the way.

If I remember the spirit of that rule was to penalize the guys that "go find the QB" after a turnover and mostly when the QB never even tries to get involved in the tackle in the first place. This looked like a case where the guy was going to block anyone he came across and it turned out to be the QB. It's not fair for a QB to try to be allowed to get involved in a tackle and the other team not allowed to block him. So, in theory I think it should not have been a penalty. But, what makes it close is that the hit came after the tackle (so you can say hte play was over) and the QB had definitely eased up. So, yeah, he did try to blast the shit out of QB and he did know it was the QB...tough call and either way teh ref went, I'd say isn't egregious IMO

I thought it was perfectly legal.

Cheaper than a dollar store lawn chair.....
He knew what he was doing, trying to get Foles out of the game, but it back fired on him.....
That cost them their chance to win the game, you never want to motivate the other team when you're in a close one....As Gomer Pyle would say; that's just du-umb !!!!!!

When your team has possession of the ball in play you find someone in the other uniform and lay him out. But it's a new game, so I guess it was a cheap shot.

If we're talking about how Nick Foles needs to have his head on a swivel, then why aren't we talking about Chris Baker needing to not commit early to hitting a guy? Why can't the guy that's doing the hitting have the ability to stop when he sees the play is already over? That doesn't give him an excuse to just hit a guy because he had already committed to doing it, you have to be smart enough to know when to stop, you have to be able to react in situations like that and know that it's going to be late

Cobie...idk about that...I've said it many times the viciousness of the hit was uncalled for but there is a rule that protects QBs in this exact situation...if Foles follows protocol it's doubtful we're talking about this today...you don't put it at the discretion of the defender.

The defender knew what he was doing, I'll leave it at that

Once he throws the pick, he becomes a defensive player.

If the quarterback is not allowed to be blocked because he is still a quarterback, then he should not be allowed to get into the play and attempt to make a tackle either.

Fair is fair....

oh wait.

We're talking about quarterback treatment. Scratch that. They will forever more receive special treatment in Roger Goofdell's NFL.

I only saw a quick glance at the "hit" and it did appear cheap. From what I saw I thought anyone would get called for a hit like that regardless of whether it was a QB or not.

Hate to hijack the thread but how is this cheap shot not flagged?

https://vine.co/v/O7bXm2LMYul

Because the ball was coming that way & the defender dind't see the int. He was attempting to make a play on the receiver who was the intended target of the pass. To me, it looks like had the ball not been intercepted, it would have arrived there the same time as the defender.

Yes he did, that's exactly why you don't leave it up to the defender...doing what Foles did, the QB is gonna get taken out 9 out of 10 times if you do.

it was illegal. Simple as that.
In fact if I were the eagles, I would be brawling after that hit on the QB.

While I feel it was legal. Was he going to make the play? Was the defensive player going out of his way to completely crush Foles yes.

Legal yes ... Tasteless and cheap also
Nothing cheap about it. Just good hard nosed football.

It should have been a pf for a defenseless receiver. If you look at the replay once the ball is picked the back judge's eyes are on Kam and not the intended receiver so he missed it. I remember watching it full speed and wondering why there wasn't a flag.
