Well Texas swept the reeling braves. Can they win 63 games and still get the first pick? Let's find out!

I had a good feeling that Colby vs the Braves would mean a win for him. Colby is really making the decision to bring him back next season an easy one. The bionic hip is holding together.

He's gotten better and stronger the further along the year has gotten, which says to me the hip should hold up. I think it's a no-brainer to bring him back next season. Makes way more sense since he's proven, than JD taking another flyer on a Hanson, Saunders, Harden, Oswalt, Jason Jennings type shit storm

Well they still need two more starters. I really don't wanna see Tepesch back unless he gets a lot better. I am thinking it's gonna be Darvish, Holland, Guy they sign or trade for, Lewis, Tepesch. Depending on who that 3rd guy is it could be an above average rotation. Perez will hopefully be ready after the ASB and they will ease him back into things. Not really counting on him to contribute much.

Wise not to count on Perez as we have seen with arm injuries a la Joe Nathan, Feliz etc it's an 18-24 month timetable to get back and be effective. You are right though we still need 2 additions as well as Colby. I would prefer to let Tep look really good at RR again to start next season as we will surely need more than 5 starters. Nick and Nick both still have some work to do to be ML pitchers

When is MLB going to come down on Joe West? He's a punk bully and has been off the lease for years. But for him to put his hand on a player has got to be punished, and hard IMO.

I think they bring Colby back to go along with Yu and Derek. I also think they will count on finding one starter internally among the youngsters for the 5th spot. I think they sign one free agent who will likely be seen as a #3 or #4 starter.

I know some of you - probably most - will go crazy about this one. But if I'm the Rangers brass, I go to Yu and offer to buy back his next 2 years, since he's playing for such a bargain, and offer a 5/6 year deal at $20 mil or so per. Maybe add in a opt-out after 4 years. But I'm getting away from the overall point.

If Yu balks and we're at a total impasse, then I try to trade him. B/C if we can't sign him beyond his current status, he's telling us he's going elsewhere just as soon as he hits FA.

Right now, his value is extremely high, and frankly I'm not positive we can be a true contender for 2015 with him and not having a few minor miracles fall right for us.

I look at him making about $9 mil per for the next 2 years as a great opportunity for another team to get a very top end starter for 2 years anyway, and incredibly cheap.

Look what the A's did just to get Lester for 3 months.

I'm not advocating trading Darvish. But if he's not willing to commit beyond the next 2 I really don't see what choice we've got, and this upcoming season, not 2016 would be ideal to reload. And I mean really, reload.

Commencing firing.

i hope they aren't stupid enough to go into next season with Tepesch in the starting rotation. hopefully JD has learned and signs a couple of good FA starters to complement Yu and Derek and brings back Lewis as our #5

I love the idea of signing Darvish long term, but I wouldn't give up on him if he doesn't sign right away. He may want to wait and see which direction the franchise is going before committing long term. We have to have an ace so we might as well load up and sign him before he gets to the open market and we can't sign him.

There was a really good article in today's DMN about how the new manager and the GM must buy off on each other's vision and present a unified message to the players. To me, the same should hold true for the players to the team.

If Yu doesn't see this franchises desire to win, even with today's dismal record, then him waiting to see which way the team is going, does nothing more than raise my concern level and illustrates his intention of moving on. And I don't understand exactly what you mean by "which direction the franchise is going" in. If you're suggesting it's got to be a win now mode, then I disagree with the plan. We've just got too many questions going into 2015 to feel like trades and costly FA moves are what's best beyond 2015.

If I'm JD, I go to him with a plan about the teams "vision" for the short, as well as long term plan. But I'd only do this after we had a new mgr and pitching coach - assuming Maddux goes to Houston - in place.

Again, I don't want to trade Darvish. But if the team reads his intention to test the FA market in 2017 as what he desires, this changes everything. I think other organizations would line up with a treasure of young players to have a Darvish under their control even if it's just for 2 years.

The vision should come from the GM and the manager should be the extension of that vision. Otherwise you can end up with two visions and have problems in the clubhouse. That's exactly what happened in Houston this year.

Agreed....did you see the article this morning? I may not have relayed the total context of the article correctly. It was a good one about how, over the past 20 years plus, the vision for most ML teams was to promote an ex-player into the GM position and it was more or less a good-old-boy network. In today's game it's so much more analytically defined position and there is only 3 - think that was the number - of GM's presently with player/on-field backgrounds.

When you starting your new job?

Sorry.....meant to say, I also believe this was somewhat true with Wash, even if JD and company are saying otherwise.

When you starting your new job?

I read something like that, but not sure if it was the exact article. I might have read a summary on LSB.

I really like that most GMs never played the game now. It's a different type of work that requires a different kind of understanding. That's not to say that players cannot be a good GM. I bet there are a few guys out there that could do well at the job.

I just don't think most players can make the shrewd tough calls that you have to be able to make as a GM, because of their emotional attachment to the game. You need a cold heart sometimes and a good mix of business savvy and love for baseball is necessary.

Just waiting on the background check etc to go through. I will fill out the hiring paper work when that is settled and begin orientation the week after that is processed. So hopefully in the next two weeks. I am looking forward to it.
