I think Gallardo might be a serviceable #4 and at the right price and years of course. I would give Shields 5 probably

Gallardo won't want to be paid like a #4 and therein lies the problem

And that would be a problem of course. I don't see us getting a #1 in FA, Daniels better figure out how to lock up Darvish soon and try to make a serious run at Shields. He will have to overpay probably, in $ rather than years. Hard to get FA pitchers to sign in Texas if you don't. We will need a couple good pitching acquisitions to get back to contending next year

I am also reticent to over pay a guy who has pitched his whole career in the NL.

This is another good argument, as you see in another post where I said think AJB's success is probably better suited in the NL. Dickey is probably thinking he should have stayed in the NL about now as well

Not to mention he's had to redefine how he has to pitch due to a loss of velocity while not being able to maintain his K numbers

Felix Hernandez has lost velocity but has maintained a high K rate b/c his other pitches have gotten better not necessarily the case with Gallardo, whose slider, cuveball and changeup havn't really gotten any better over the years while his fastball varies in effectiveness

Well it seems that what had me thinking on all this was signing Colby back soon for next year and that is a move I would like to see sooner rather than later. Though we need him plus 2 starters IMO as the Teps and Nmart's and Mik's could use a little more development. This year has jerked guys around way to much

Yeah, there is no way the Rangers will be competitive in 2015 if either Nick is in the rotation. If you start planning now at having Darvish, Holland, and Lewis that is something to build around with a potential 2 or 3 added in FA or a trade.

Oh one pitcher that should be on the radar is Brandon McCarthy.

Was thinking that earlier as I was looking at the list of FA pitchers for 2015, he had a rough start in AZ this year but has bounced back nicely and had a great start his last time out for the Yankees

There's no way you could determine that about any of the young guys, you're assuming based on previous performance not potential development... not saying you're wrong or I'm right, just that it's impossible to determine at this point... my bet is one of Tepesch, Martinez or Mikolas makes the big jump next year

That is based off information we know now. Off season and ST will determine a lot more. I think based on stuff alone Mikolas has the best shot going forward. I would be okay with him being in the bullpen if he can hit 97 like he showed the other day.

I would say based on what I have seen so far and all 3 have certainly taken their lumps, Miles would be the closest to being ready for spot starts or an injury call up. I think Nmart should start at Frisco next year unless he has a great spring and starts at RR. While they are all being pressed into developing at the Ml level right now, I think their best opportunity comes by building confidence in the minors. Not saying that Tep or Miles can't prove the next 2 1/2 months to be able to develop more and the spring certainly allows them to prove something as well but they shouldn't be pressed. We have seen this year you can never have enough depth and the team would be best suited for success by signing proven ML pitchers

The rest of this season Tepesch needs to throw as many changeups as possible in live action and this offseason he needs to throw a whole bunch more

Tepesch needs to develop his secondary offerings with a little more urgency than he has thus far, this is stuff he and the club knew LAST year

Martinez has essentially the same problem, I still have faith in both to do so, but Martinez would definitely benefit with some AAA seasoning

Mikolas is hard for me to get a read on, b/c I haven't seen him pitch enough due to my hiatus, all I know is he has high velocity and is up and down in his performances

I had hoped for more with Tep building on last year and his good start at RR. He needs to spot the FB, throw his change up for strikes and mix in the splitter and his good curveball

All of what you said is reasonable. Miles from what I've seen has he has pop on the fastball and his breaking balls are very nice when on. I don't have any scouting reports around me at the moment to see if anything he throws is labeled as a + pitch.

The jury is still out on Holland. If he is able to be back to the pitcher he was last year then we are good. Hopefully this injury does not keep that from happening. We will know better by the end if the year.

“I feel like the Rangers have given me an opportunity and stayed behind me, and I’m certainly grateful for that,” Lewis said. “This has been a journey. But this is home. This is where I want to be. I definitely want to come back here next year, and I’m hoping something can be worked out.”

After Lewis went two months of pitching without between-start bullpen session as a precaution, pitching coach Mike Maddux was finally able to get him on the mound for some prep work.

This may have been discussed already, so sorry if this is the case. But does it surprise y'all that we had no knowledge of Colby not being able to work between starts? I would have thought the Rangers would have kept this a secret.

Oh one pitcher that should be on the radar is Brandon McCarthy.

Ironic you should bring him up, since his house - loft actually - was featured in the DMN very recently, and it's on the market.

"Former Texas Rangers pitcher Brandon McCarthy, now a Yankee, is reportedly selling his modern Dallas home for $1.95 million. The property, right off the Katy Trail, is 2,875 square feet, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms."

And it's beautiful. Perhaps we should put a call into his agent, or just buy it at an inflated rate and use it as incentive to resign with us. :yahoo:
