Glad to see I got so many of ya's wheels turning with the closer/defined role question. :yahoo:

One thing about the 1960's or earlier was the starters pitched so much longer and the 100 pitch count wall was not even invented. Back in 1982 a guy from the Senators no less named Cheney threw 228 pitches in 16 innings. And in 63 Juan Marichal vs Warren Spahn 16 innings each and both had over 200 pitches.

But that was a long time ago and the game has evolved - not necessarily for the best mind ya - and we've got such defined roles, and all this lefty-lefty matchup stuff makes me a little nuts at times.
Pitching staffs like 1954 Cleveland Indians didn't need closers. Bob Feller Bob Lemon Early Wynn and Mike Garcia led the club to 111 wins.

I suspect the number of "different" pitches makes a difference on any pitchers arm. Meaning....back in the day, all we knew how to throw was a fastball/curve/change-up and a few pitchers threw a screwball. Varying degrees of arm angle/speed but now these guys throw slurves, curves, split fingered, 2/4 seam fastballs, etc. Surely that puts more stress and fatigues the arm faster.

But that said, if you've never seen the windup of one Juan Marichal in the 60's, then you've never seen an exercise in balance, dexterity, flexibility and great movement like that. And the amount of energy it took to just throw the ball to the plate with his leg kick was amazing. He looked like a big Bruce Lee - before there was a Bruce Lee - with that leg kick.

Darvish starts tonight, right?
Slated but Wash didn't want to start him and waste his start with possibility of the game being rained out.

Last team to have 4-20 game winners.....and they did reliever, or two.......Grant Jackson comes to mind.

And this team played such solid defense - especially up the middle with Belanger/Grich & Blair in center - they were a team of teams no doubt.

Got to see them play several times....loved em.

Clemente was awesome in that series on offense and defense.

Whatta ya mean? He only went 12-29 (.414) with 2 HR and 4 of the Pirates 21 RBI. :suds:

A man among men for sure.

Pittsburgh had some damn good pitching too back then; Blass, Briles, Kison, and crazy Doc Ellis.

People will be talking about him long after we're gone.
