He shouldn't be playing at all if he's hurt, but so long as he is, there is no reason for him to push it unnecessarily. If he worsens the injury hustling on a sure out, he costs the team a heck of a lot more than he would have gained by running hard.

I agree, but if he can't run out a play he has no business in the game.

clearly they should have traded Bryce Harper instead of Steve Lombardozzi. Lombardozzi sucks, but he sure can run out those grounders!

He shouldn't of been playing then, if he is he should be able to run out a play. That is only fair.

Then it should be fair that a good amount of the blame goes to Matt Williams for starting a player with a leg injury, no?

I played baseball for 15 years and watched forever. What is the first thing they teach you, run out EVERY play. It's easy, fundamental shit and that is a fact.

If he can't run out a play bc of his leg, he shouldn't be playing...plain and simple

LOL at you totally missing the point

If a kid with a big ego says he is fine, which most likely he did, managers will start the guy. It could be more serious.

No, you don't appreciate guys that hustle on every play. Makes sense since you are a shitty Philly fan :laugh3:

probably has something to do with the fact that whether a player hustles or not makes a negotiable (at best) difference.

Dude cool it. He played baseball for 15 years, he obviously knows what he's talking about

Then again, talent > hustle. You're not going to win much with a team full of gritty players who aren't that talented.

I see people say Harper's overrated (not necessarily in this thread) because his stats don't compare to Trout.

But saying he's just potential is certainly not true. Few players have accomplished as much as Harper has at his age. Few players make it to the bigs at the age of 19. Even fewer have any kind of success. His age 19-21 stats compare very favorably to guys like Mel Ott and Ken Griffey Jr.

Only 4 players (Ott is one- can't think of the other 3) have a higher WAR total through their age 20 season.

I remember when Marlins Fan Base (AKA "Teal Monster" on here, though I think he got banned?) posted on ESPN saying his opinion meant more than ours because he was a LOOGY in college.

So bc you're talented, you don't hustle. Makes no sense, you have to embedd that work ethic in your locker room. Can't let young punks control the locker room.

Don't say shit when you don't know then. I guess we can expect one shitty opinion after another from you. Not suprising at all.

Yadier Molina is probably one of the slowest guys in MLB, but also the best catcher. Yet he at least runs all the way through the bag on a ground ball. At least Harper could have "half assed it" all the way through the bag instead of making a right turn 45 feet down the line. Run, jog, crawl through the bag.

You realize that you're acting like Harper never hustles? This was a one time thing that was a result of an injury.

You're just looking for any excuse to blame 'young punks,' and it's fairly obvious.

Is Nick Swisher a young punk also?

Nobody is talking about the real issue here. Clearly Harper should have run (jogged) through the base, the question is whether or not Williams handled it right. Does showing Harper up publicly do anything positive for the team?

It's just a small wake up call to him to remind him that he needs to prove himself before he is the superstar he thinks he is. I liked the benching and I think he should have been benched for the whole game or maybe 2. The manager is making a point to a young player and I liked it. You don't see it much in baseball anymore especially when it comes to "superstar" players, which Harper is not. He needs to prove himself and should do everything to prove to everyone that he is or will be an elite bat for years to come.
