If the best player available in round 2 is QB, do we take him?
I'd say every position on this team is a position of need except starting QB, RB, and OLB.
Obviously not. But then if the best player on the board is a QB at 34, some one will make us an offer and if not you would fall back to your second best player. But in no situation do you take some one at a position of need if he isnt worthy of the pick. Especially high up. Because human nature is going to have you rate those guys a little higher up simply because you have a need there to begin with. As i said, thats how you end up drafting guys like Malcolm Kelly and Devin Thomas within ten picks of each other because you in fact graded them higher based on your need.
Grade your top 150 players, forget about position or your particular needs. Once you have them graded, then start looking at your needs and figure out who might be there when you pick in a particular round. If you need a WR at 34, and you had one or two rated higher than 34 and they are there, you take one. Noe if you get to 34, and the best WR on the board was your 50-65 guy... you dont reach. You take the OLB you had rated in the top 20 who fell to you. Even IF you dont need an OLB, you just added good depth.
Then again a smart team is going to go into the draft with as few needs as possible to help prevent reaching. Shanahan for all his faults, was actually good at NOT basing his draft off of needs so much as perceived value. And at least while he was in DC, he hit more times than he missed.
