We spoke about him a little in " Coaching staff tracker thread.

IMO since he most likely is not the play caller, didn't spark much interest. He is a puppet was percption. He will be more important to developement of Matt.

This staff of no names ( non sexy picks) will definitely change culture here and be innovative. Seems these hires are all guys getting promotions that have worked with many pro bowl players. In the areas of Lions most glaring weaknesses. As in Austin and Lombardi. Like the LB coach having DC time also. will help Austin for sure.

From what I've read Lombardi seems to be installing his offense and it will look like the Saints O. I'm not sure why everyone is so sure he won't be calling plays. I mean why would he install an offense like the Saints but Caldwell is calling plays? Wouldn't Caldwell install his O if he was going to call plays? Didn't we complain about Caldwell's offense in Baltimore this year? My bet is Caldwell knows he a better overseer than OC.

I would say I like this hire and the Austin hire for the same reason: they don't have a track record at this job at this level so it's going to be exciting to see what they do instead of basically knowing what they'll do.

Lombardi will be very interesting to watch going forward, especially if they give him the keys to the offense. His only experience as an OC was at Mercyhurst College.

I agree with whoever said he is basically going to be a puppet with the OC title after his name. His main responsibility will be developing Matthew Stafford.

No real excitement behind any of the guys hired, but at least they have a staff in place now and they will be bringing the element of surprise against anyone they play, as the OC and DC have never held those positions.

Should make for an interesting season. I may even break down and actually watch some preseason games, just to see what these guys are going to have the team running.

posted this on a different thread, but ill post it here too. I didnt like the caldwell hire at first. But day by day i'm starting to like it more and more. His press confrence was amazing, and the support staff that he is putting around stafford is what I like. The staff he is hiring are masters at what our weaknesses are ( if that makes any sense). The offensive coordinator was a QB Coach, and a good one at that. And the DC that he hired was a Secondary Coach, and from what i've read, a good one as well. Bill Sheridan is a very good LB coach as well.

My thoughts exactly Bishop. I think Lombardi will call the plays and maybe Lombardi was a target that we werent aware of. I remember Mayhew coming out and saying that he wanted a team that looked similar to the Saints a year or two ago. I also like the idea of starting fresh with the coordinators as new schemes may help a lot. I just hope these guys are as good as what I've read.

Vanilla is a bad word in the context of a football discussion. JS, SL, and GC love vanilla. That's why none of them have jobs.

His experience indicates he should contribute to Stafford's progression from being a raw talent QB to a poished, professional QB.

I've been poished before. In fact, I'm a little poished right now. Believe me when I tell you, you don't want Stafford to be poished.

When other coaches with no ties to the candidate or team has good things to say that is an excellent sign. Everyone is assuming he will be Caldwells puppet. Will be interesting to see.

I will have to admit, the first time I ever heard of the wide-nine, I thought they were talking about a Wisconsin girls softball team.

Let me see if I've figured out how things work.

Austin is just in Detroit to coach the secondary. He'll just be Caldwell's puppet with a new title to lure him away from Baltimore.

Is this going to be the new Lions catch phrase? It seems to be floating around here a lot as if everyone got texts and emails from Caldwell himself.

No real excitement behind any of the guys hired
I feel the exact opposite. I'm excited to see what Austin can do with this defense. He knows how to coach and improve the secondary and that's our biggest issue on D. We still have retained Washburn who helped improve the D-line. What's not to be excited about there? Sheesh.

As for the offense, yes, Lombardi doesn't have much experience as an O-coordinator, but Caldwell does. And It's not like Lombardi wasn't sitting in with he rest of the offensive staff during his 5 years in N.O. He has had plenty of time to learn how to formulate plays and game plans.

Count me in as excited to see what this new staff can bring to the table. And if I'm in the minority, then so be it. Anything is better than watching Linehan and Gunther coordinate our offense and defense.

To be honest, I didn't give Schwartz and Cunningham enough grief over the way they handled the defense. I suppose that is because the defense played well this season.

But I have to say, it will be a great relief to see a coaching staff that doesn't put everything on the defensive linemen. 'You have to get to the QB before coverage breaks down. Oh, and by the way, you have to stop the run as well.' Bullshit.

Can't wait to see what an actual coach will do with this talent.

So it's official? Our new OC and DC will be dubbed Bert and Ernie?

Not sure why you're taking this all personal smitty. I'm not telling you how to think, I just find it odd that every new hire now is a puppet according to many on here. So because these new hires don't have a ton of experience as a coordinator, it means they're a puppet? How are guys ever supposed to move up the coaching ladder if they never get a shot anywhere new?

I only felt Lombardi to be a puppet not the other hires. Lombardi calls the games and I am wrong, no biggy. Been wrong about a lot. Not quite as a bad as Swarm's latest run of predictions...

Puppet or not, he has spent 5 valueable yrs. around Sean. Seen how Drew prepares. This can only help. DOn't care who is right. I just want it to work.
