The defense gave up less yards, had more sacks, and finished statistically better in most areas. The offense had almost twice as many give aways.

But every one screams we must fire Haslett. Most DCs who moved their unit from 31st to 18th would be celebrated. But Skinsfans... well any one would be better than Haslett right?? I mean 34 give aways by the offense or basically twice as many as we gave up in 2012 had no bearing on the defense right??

It is more about Haslett's mind set and his philosophy on when to apply pressure and when not too. How many times can we have 3rd & long and he brings zero pressure and ultimately, we give up a first down. Make the QB get the ball out of his hands quickly, rally to the football, make a tackle and get off the field. He has no creativity and plays not to lose. Usually traits that find assistant coaches out of the NFL quickly.

The obvious question becomes, was this his call or the head coaches?? Two years ago when he was bringing the house people cried he was blitzing too much and we didnt have the DBs to support that. So he adjusts and doesnt blitz as much, and now he is too timid?? Like I said, I think you guys just want change for change sake since there really isnt a better option out there that would come and work for Snyder. But as i said, our defense improved in most areas last season. the offense actually regressed. Give Haslett an actual starting lineup and he will field a defense good eough to get it done. And I dont see a DC out there that could bring us a top ten defense in the next two years. Not that would work for Snyder in any case.

I agree completely. Haslett hasnt been good enough here for me to want to keep him, but the main problem is I dont think hes ever really been that good of a coach.

Im fine if we retain him. But Im in the minority of one on that one apparently. My take is, if he stays, he gets some of the resources he needs and our defense finishes in the 12-20 range. If he goes, I expect our defense to be in the 28-32 range and we will be saying once again if only the defense could stop some one, people wouldnt be so mean to our QB.

Deal! If Haslett succeeds I won't bitch. If he continues to fail, I'm rubbing it in. And if he stays I won't accept anything but a top 16 defense. Even that is middle of the pack which apparently is acceptable to your 12-20 range. I guess mediocre it is...

By that rule, if we replace him and our defense get worse, you will accept me pointing out that some one can do worse then right?? And of course if he does well you wont complain. Why would you?

I think you are going to be disappointed. Per Gruden's presser, its clear he is a fan of the 3-4.

Honestly - I am not a Haslett fan, but I will support him in whatever capacity he is used by with the Redskins. As someone else alluded to - the biggest issue I have is their inability to stop almost anyone on 3rd and long. It is bizarre. I swear I would rather see the Redskins defending against 3rd & inches than 3rd & 14. Look at the last Cowboys game. As soon as they backed the Boys to the 10 yd line on the goal line stand they were doomed! Sure enough they gave up a TD on the next play. This tendency has been a consistent over the years regardless of personnel.

It also sounds like several people here have this burning desire to be right about things. I really don't care. Let me be wrong about everything as long as the Redskins are heading in the right direction & winning again. As far as a promise for fans to not complain about things - forget about it - not going to happen & it should not as it is our right to complain about anything under the sun.

Either is fine as long as they employ a system & find some more talent to rush the passer better. As much as people complain about the secondary I believe that the lack of a pass rush was a much bigger issue last season. If they can find one more dominant rusher to compliment Kerrigan & Orakpo that should really start to point them in the right direction.

I personally hate it. I hate seeing Orakpo and Kerrigan drop back in coverage. HATE it. I want them attacking the line and backfield as much as possible.

So here's the question. Did we not get a consistent pass rush because we didn't have the right players or because we used our talent wrong? Most teams don't have the talent of both a Kerrigan and Orakpo. We should be getting more out of them in terms of pressure than we are. There is a couple of reasons for this. First, and the most obvious, is that they don't rush the passer enough. They were used way too much in coverage. Just a misuse of talent and made both our pass rush and our pass coverage weak. This was a coaching issue. Not sure which coach. Second, we did not generate enough push up the middle, collapsing the pocket and flushing the QB into Rak's or Kerrigans arms. With other teams, this happens all the time. With us, not so much. As Rak and Kerrigan apply outside pressure (with outside contain responsibility), the QB usually can step up into the pocket, buying time. Cofield has done a yeoman's job and plays the run very well. He does a good job of holding the line, but he is just not big enough to push a double team back into the QB. This is critical for a 3-4 scheme. Cofield is basically out of position.

So if we are going to stay with the 3-4, I believe we have to find a true NT. This is a guy that is 6'2" or so and comes in around 350lbs. He is shorter and wide and can get leverage to drive a C or a C and G back into the QB. This is a very hard player to find and one reason I'm not a fan of the 3-4. There aren't many vince wilfork's out there.

As far as coaching, there are some reports that Shanahan directed much of the defensive game calls. I discount them somewhat. The defense belongs to Haslett. It would be one thing if Haz had a good record as a DC before he came here. He didn't. He's never directed a top level defense and he's been doing this for over a decade. Think about that. He's been a DC for various teams for over 10 years and has never had anything better than a medicore defense. Why would we expect something different this time. If I'm Gruden, I have a bit of a grace period as any new coach does. So if you are considering change, now is the time to do it.

under haslett's version of the 3-4 , the passive one but another coach with the 3-4 could play it differently

Also - remember that all teams - including the Redskins - don't employ pure versions of any of these schemes - they vary between defenses every game. Forget the scheme - it is much more important to have the right players and coach them correctly throughout the year.

They were used way too much in coverage. Just a misuse of talent and made both our pass rush and our pass coverage weak. This was a coaching issue.

80% of snaps against the pass they are rushing the QB. Or in other words ...

they drop into coverage 10 out of 50 plays.

OLB in a 34 are asked to do that occasionally in order to allow a safety to blitz

Its this versatility & variety to use multiple rushers that makes the 34 so confusing for QB to read coverages.

You could argue we need better execution from the LB in getting penetration/coverage, or better execution from DL getting pressure, or better execution for the secondary in coverage/penetration ...

but the scheme is sound. 8 of the top 10 defenses are 34.
