You know shit aint broke why are they breaking it?

Excess demand for NFL playoff football? I don't like the idea, but I'm sure I'll watch the extra games if they are added.

What demand? From the responses I have read in this post not to many are demanding it.

The only change they should consider is using record to determine slot.

Although most aren't demanding, most will still tune in to "must win" football games and the NFL knows this. If they add too many, it will dilute the level of play too much and they'd lose viewers. I don't think 2 more teams does this, though I don't think there is any need for it either.

I'd rather they keep it the same. It places importance on winning the division. It places importance on the other games, and it hurts teams and fans that dont' make it because they were so close and helps generate the interest for next year and gives places like this a reason to exist so we can come talk about shit we hope happens in the offseason :)

Football is a pretty taxing sport, I think the season is long enough and I think it is competitive enough just how it is.

I mean "demand" in the economic sense (i.e., the league can still sell the TV rights to the additional games and sell tickets for them without lowering the prices it charges for them).

The NFL currently has the best combo of regular season and playoff formats of any sport.

Agreed. In my opinion, however, the league could even improve the quality of what it sells by eliminating games in London and Thursday night games. That's obviously not going to happen, though, since it would reduce profit. Seems to me that adding extra playoff games, if that happens, is solely aimed at increasing profit.

I'd argue MLB. I think their playoff format is perfect.

Really? One game playoffs for WC teams in baseball? That makes no sense to me. Any team in MLB has close to 50% chance of beating any other team in only one game.

It's changing and fans will complain about the changes. How many fans will stop watching the games, though?

I like the idea of only allowing teams to play on thursday if they are coming off of a bye week. There were WAY too many injuries in those thursday games

I would agree that the playoff format is better in baseball, but the regular season isn't. And that's why I said combo. The way that the regular season affects the postseason and makes every game so important is perfect the way it is IMO.

This new format would put the most pressure on those teams at the top of the conference. Can you imagine your team being 13-3 and tied for the best record in the division only to lose that #1 to a tiebreaker. Instead of having a bye and playing the lowest seed remaining, you essentially have to play a play-in game.

I can't stop watching because I love the game too much.

Exactly. And the league knows that there are millions of other just like you, with more on the way.

Maybe none that still does not justify taking a perfectly functioning system and weakening it.

The 18 to 24 year old demographic for Football has been dropping.

I think the Thursday games are dumb as well. I hate them and typically do not watch them.
