Report: NFL Plans To Expand Postseason Field To Seven Teams Per Conference « CBS Boston

Dan Patrick said on his radio show on Monday morning that NFL plans to add one more wild card to each conference, a move that would expand the playoff field from six to seven teams per conference. Andrew Perloff from The Dan Patrick Show tweeted the news on Monday.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora tweeted that the NFL said no decision has been made, and that such a change “would have to be voted on by owners… To this point it hasn’t been presented to them. Of course, it could be at May meeting. [Patrick] may have inside info that enough votes are there [to support the change].

I'm not crazy about this to be honest. It would eliminate the #2 seed getting a bye week and all for the sake of letting another 'meh' team get in. (And yes, I'm aware that had this been in place this year, my Steelers would have made it).

Leave it the way it is.

So it's basically like the extra wild card spot in baseball? This is pretty dumb.

Whatever happened to the "win your shit" argument that you were all making a couple of days ago? Same argument applies in the postseason. If you can't beat #7 then GTFO

It still applies. Most of the people posting are against this.

This is completely idiotic. The NFL is the only professional sports league that lets the correct number of teams in. Leave it how it is, no reason to fix something that isn't broken.

This is also a problem I have with expanding the playoffs.

6 of 16, that's it.

There are 32 teams and that means 20 are going to be left out in the cold because they weren't good enough.

In the NBA 16 of 30 teams get it...that's over half the league! I don't want the NFL to go that route. Leave it as it is.

I'm on the fence:

Arguments for:
1) Two extra playoff games = more money for NFL and more entertainment for fans.
2) Teams like the '08 Pats(11-5) and this year's Cards(10-6) wouldn't get left out. The Cards had a better record than 2 division winners.
3) Why does the 2nd best team in each conference deserve a bye week? Perhaps that should be left for only the best team in each conference.
4) Only 16 games a year. A single injury to a franchise QB can kill an entire season, even if he only misses 2-3 games.
5) Will slightly diminish some of the asinine tiebreakers in effect.

Arguments against:
1) Might have a lot more 8-8 or even a 7-9 team get in. Although 7-9 would be rare.
2) Too many teams (14/32) - if you're slightly above average you have a chance.

I think the arguments for outweigh the arguments against, but I'm a bit of a purist. I guess I could get on board whatever they decide.

Just apply a Democrat "all teams make the playoffs and get a trophy" system. That way nobody's feelings get hurt.

Meh, at some point, a line has to be drawn... otherwise you may as well just have all 32 teams make the playoffs. If you can't beat the #16 seed, you were never a contender! If you don't like it! Don't watch!

always trying to fix what isn't broken. I hope this backfires and completely waters down the regular season like the nba and nhl. greed should not hurt the product on the field.

I guess the multi millions a year the NFL makes isn't enough money. Think 14 of the 32 teams is insane to put in the playoffs. Remember when it was the best teams make the playoffs? Now its just be in the top half of the league.

I don't care about the #2 seed not getting a bye though. I liked it when there was only 5 teams in the playoffs. Let the Wild card teams eliminate each other before playing the division Champs. Only with 4 division champs make the worst division champ play the wild card team.

Of course less Playoff games means less NFL money so fuck it just water it down I guess.

Even though this would've benefited the Cardinals this year, I wouldn't like this one bit. I think the amount of teams making the playoffs is fine. I just don't like how the seeding works.

Its like the NBA now where half the damn teams make the playoffs. You don't even need a good season to make it to the playoffs, just need to not suck completely.

It's lame, but they'll make money, and we'll tune in, so one would think this is going to happen.

It's going to happen because despite all of us complaining and moaning about it we're going to tune in and we're going to watch and we're going to talk about it.

And recent playoff history is helping the NFL's case because the lower seeded teams are having success in the playoffs.

Road teams were almost a perfect 4-0 this weekend and a team like the Chargers who needed a lot of help were able to win and advance to the next round.

Really? One game playoffs for WC teams in baseball? That makes no sense to me. Any team in MLB has close to 50% chance of beating any other team in only one game.

Sorry, I meant before the second wild card was brought in. The old format, with one wild-card, was my favorite playoff format in sports.

Now, I'm AGAINST making any changes.

That being said, I heard that if they did add in a Wild Card team (and another post-season game), the concession would be to get rid of one of the PRE-season games.

I may be able to get behind that. As a previous and future season ticket holder, those pre-season games are horrible. The ratings for the 1 extra post season game would probably equal all the pre-season games combined.

Someone is really trying to make this political?

Didn't you know ? 2 of the 10 commandments of the board are that someone must make every thread political and someone must make every thread about their team or their team's rival.

This is no big deal, imo. This year the Cards & Steelers would have made it. I think they're both better teams currently than a couple who made the playoffs. If the NFL sees an extra buck in it it's going to happen anyway. They shouldn't go beyond 14 of 32, though.
