After putting up 10 on the 23rd ranked defense at home in the playoffs? Maybe not.

Chargers were exponentially better on defense lately, than in the first half of the season... so take 23rd ranked with a grain of salt. Gruden didn't make the two terrible throws that Dalton made, so I think this game doesn't hurt his chances.

Very likely both coordinators on the Bengals will be gone shortly, coaching other teams. And the vacancy teams are happier that they get to approach them now.

yep. dalton's 3 straight playoff abortions does not bode well for Gruden. if an o.c. cannot prove he can develop a franchise qb, most organizations will pass on him.

Idk...true, he did turn it over 4 times, but watching the game...I think he overwhelmed his QB by abandoning the run (played from shotgun on nearly every snap of the 3/4 Q)...made it kind easy on the SD DEF by eliminating the threat playaction pass so early in the game...they were blitzing the hell out of his QB, still running the same protection...no extra TEs, nothing to help out...his second half game planning was terrible if you ask me.

Down 4 in the middle of the 3Q on your field and he went shotgun formation the rest of the way except maybe 1 play...essentially turning the game over to the QB...too much on Dalton....panic move imo, but he might get a job still.

The problem here is Andy Dalton is not a franchise QB. If he is your franchise QB then your franchise will not be winning anything

Strange, Jon Gruden had the same problem...

Agreed on the Charger defense, but it seems like a lot of people didn't realize how good they were playing prior to yesterday.

At least you got a gift-wrapped SB from him, how much do I wish he would have stuck with our franchise QB?

It would have made this last 10 years of crushing incompetence a little more tolerable.

That one tops them all for me, :gaah: should have taken the keys away from Grampa Davis a long time ago.

It seems to me that Jay Gruden is like John Gruden in that he doesn't build an offense around his QBs talents like the best coaches do. I think the Grudens are limited in their stubbornness to run their offense and everybody has to adjust to that system.

Jon's harem of QBs in Tampa is proof to this. He had a pretty capable QB in Garcia but he was too proud to make it work. When Dalton was struggling Jay didnt seem to change anything. You have to help your QB out when he is turning the ball over like that and has been turning the ball over like that all year.

I have never been a fan of John Gruden as a HC and the way Dalton has been exposed and doing nothing about it, I dont think Jay would be much better. This season at least he is just a number to interview, imo.

I agree with all of this. Well stated.

yep. kind of an interesting place for him to end up. snyder usually wants a big name coach instead of a first time h.c.

A huge upgrade.

But leaving the spot empty would have been a huge upgrade.
