the best thing that could happen to the skins is if we change the version of the 3/4 we are using

if we go all the way back to the 4-3 then we are looking at another 2 years min. to get a decent defense

I already said it. Jackson who will sign back cheap. Jenkins we drafted him for a reason. Tapp decent player. Most likely Jackson/Jenkins. You will get the same overall production for very cheap money.

absolutely foolish . the drop off in production would be huge . tapp is what ? 30 , niether jenkins nor jackson(also a free agent ) are anywheer near Rak's production

you dont improve the defense by creating more holes

Garbage time sacks don't mean anything to me. His best year was his rookie year with haynesworth and that was a 4-3 defense. If you are satisfied with Rak production this year you are crazy. Not worth the money. I can wait to see what he gets offered.

oh stop with the "garbage time " sacks BS . that is what people say when they are losing a debate

i have put the facts out there

he isnt worth clay mathews 5 yr 66 mil deal but a 5yr 35 mil deal is about right

and AH , are you serious ? that guy never showed up to play

as for the 4-3 he was an OLB in that defense

and yes i am satisfied with his production , he is a 2x PB'r an alternate in one . he is our best defender and his production is on par with kerrigan's who people say is better

in 4 years (- one for injury ) he has made 2 pro bowls and pushed for another , so for a 13th overall pick he is doing well plus he is entering his prime

Is Jim Haslett Limiting Brian Orakpo and Redskins' Potential on Defense? | Bleacher Report

BR is normally garbage but look at the pass coverage stats for kerrigan and Rak . they cover more then double suggs does and only 8 3/4 olbs cover more

look at how much Suggs rushes the passer and how much kerrigan and rak do . 91 to 79 %

hasletts version of the 3/4 is hurting both players

Completely agree. Therefore - the logical conclusion is that Haslett is a lousy coach as I have been stating all season. Part of the solution is simple. At a minimum you tell Shanahan that he must fire at least Haslett & Burns. If he refuses then he has also has to go. This crap about protecting your friends has no business in the NFL. Then again it may be a moot pt if they continue to play Jags type football (in which case all of them would/should be gone).

If Haslett stays and we continue to run this style of defense and utilize our OLBs this way, there is no reason to resign Rak. If we are not going to use him to his strength most of the time, why keep him? We need to find an OLB that is more suited for this scheme.

Of course what I would really like to see is we change the scheme, resign Rak and set him and kerrigan loose on the QB more times than not.

This ^^^^....something needs to change. I am not ready to give up on a first rounder just yet (unless he wants ridiculous money). Rak has not been lights out, but to just let him walk away?? He has too much talent and potential for that.

Well we can't give him a huge payday and then not use him to his strength, either.

Rak is a bright spot on this team right now, he's starting to step up and get better every week.

Oh, I agree. He is starting to turn it on. My point is that if we don't change the defensive scheme to give him more freedom to attack the passer, then we are wasting valuable cap space to re-sign him. He is a pass rusher first and foremost. He needs to be able to pin his ears back and wreak havoc in the backfield. He should almost NEVER be dropped back into coverage. Our goal with our front seven on passing downs should be to set up a scheme to get him free. That means moving him around. That means stunts with ILBs and DTs.

Haslett has to go.

I would like to see Mike and Kyle stay because we can finally score points, now we just need an offensive and defensive line. Protect the QB, an attack the opposing QB. Maybe we pursue Byrd from Buffalo too.

oh and I'm down for Haslett to be fired for an new 3-4 guy

I'm not on the fence at all for signing Rak. Sign him now however, he must do what he does best, rush the passer. He and Kerrigan should NEVER be in coverage and both should be rushing the passer or setting the edge on run plays, period! I for one hope Haslett is gone and we bring in a 4-3 coach who can utilize these pieces better than Haslett. Yes, a (4-3) scheme utilizing the strengths of both Orsackpo and Kerrigan to the fullest. Yes, changes will require a few personnel moves however, we need a new MLB anyway and we knew that. Outside of that, we have many of the personnel it will take now to run this scheme. Returning to a 4-3 will allow Coefield to play his natural position and now Carriker becomes relevant big time. Amerson, Hall & Merriwether fit the scheme and a nice addition to the secondary (FA) and ILB and we are set imo. Mix in a Lovie Smith who can get it done as Asst Head Coach and we have something.

Just a little football question. How do you NEVER put your OLBs in coverage? No coach in the country is going to rush 5 and cover with 7 all the time.
