... Daily Buzz: Albert Haynesworth wanted to get cut after $100 million contract from Redskins - NFL News | FOX Sports on MSN

“His goal was to come here, make a large signing bonus, and then get released and not have to do any of the work,” Cooley said. “He didn’t care about the back end of that contract, he didn’t care about making all of that money. His idea was, you paid me for what I did in the past, and my goal is to be released as soon as possible and basically take $33 million from you for absolutely nothing.”

Cooley said that Haynesworth’s intentions were no secret in the locker room, either.

“He also indicated to many players on the team that his new goal was to get released as soon as possible, sign another maybe $10, 12 million contract — that’s verbatim — go somewhere, play for a year and probably get released, and keep that money too,” Cooley said.

“I mean, if it was a player on this team currently, I would not discuss this on the air. But being the player that he was, and the guy that he was around here, this was open [knowledge] among many players in this locker room: that his goal was basically to take money.”

Cooley then closed by saying the Redskins’ signing of Haynesworth was a “terrible decision” and called Haynesworth a “horrible person” — which is probably not a stretch when talking about a guy who stomped on another player's face during a game.

Pretty sickening but no one twisted Daniel Snyder's arm to pay him.

Actually it's the only major sport where the entire contract is NOT guaranteed. In any other sport they would have been stuck with a lot more. They just picked the wrong guy to drop a ton of money on.

I think that the most surprising part of Cooley's remarks is that Haynesworth was apparently so open about his intentions to simply collect a check in exchange for not making any effort to play. I suspect that that wouldn't have gone over as well in some locker rooms as it apparently did in Washington.

Haynesworth was another of those pieces of shit that tried to compare the life of a professional athlete to slavery.

Fuck him and his ilk. Guarantee, he will be another of those millionaire athletes who, within five years of leaving the league, will be dead broke.

So what do you learn from this, if you're an NFL GM?

(1)That $ you pay scouts to investigate players backgrounds, question their old coaches about their motivation, and construct psychological profiles (especially for draftees) may be well spent. Another example is the hit Houston took with Sam Montgomery this years.

(2) The Skins were taking a risk on a guy with character issues, and they paid way too much upfront. Out 33 mil large, when due diligence might have told them to go another direction, no matter how much they liked the guy's talent.

Yeah, that was during the Vinny Cerrato era. He would never do the first bolded point, and always do the second. I am so glad that clown is gone and can't influence this organization any more. Your second point is spot-on, GS. It's not like it was a secret that AH was a giant turd before they signed him. They did it anyway and got exactly what they deserved.
